Chapter 16 - The Hidden Catch

|
The next morning, Emily arrived at her office before the sun had fully risen. She had tasked her top legal and medical research teams to dig into every single aspect of Vanguard Medical Solutions. If Richard wanted to play a public game of chess in the media, Emily needed ammunition to expose the true nature of his so-called philanthropy.
Dr. Aris, the Chief of Medicine, walked into Emily's office at 7:00 AM, holding a thick binder, his expression grim and deeply troubled.
"You were right to reject the exclusive contract, Emily," Dr. Aris said, dropping the heavy binder onto her desk. "Vanguard isn't a pharmaceutical innovator. They are a predatory patent troll."
"Explain it to me," Emily instructed, opening the binder to the first tab.
"They don't research new drugs," Dr. Aris explained, pacing the floor. "They wait for small, struggling biotech companies to invent life-saving medications, particularly for rare pediatric cancers. Then, Vanguard buys the struggling company, acquires the exclusive patent, and aggressively hikes the price of the medication by over five hundred percent."
Emily felt a wave of profound nausea wash over her as she read the internal pricing documents Dr. Aris had procured.
"They are extorting families when they are at their most vulnerable," Emily whispered, horrified by the sheer callousness of the business model. "If we had signed that contract, our hospital would have been legally bound to purchase these cancer drugs exclusively from Vanguard at these astronomical prices. It would have bankrupted our charity care fund within two years."
"Richard didn't want to give us fifty million dollars," Dr. Aris scoffed in disgust. "He wanted to lock us into a twenty-year contract where we would end up paying him hundreds of millions of dollars in inflated drug costs. It was a Trojan horse."

Emily’s eyes hardened, morphing from shock into a cold, calculated fury. Richard thought he could use the guise of charity to bleed her hospital dry. He thought he was the smartest man in the room.
"Gather every piece of evidence you have on these price hikes, Dr. Aris," Emily commanded, standing up from her desk. "I want spreadsheets, I want patent dates, and I want the names of the executives involved. If Richard wants a public spectacle, we are going to give him one he will never forget."
