Chapter 26 - The Legal Shield

|
The swift, brutal wheels of federal justice moved faster than anyone could have possibly anticipated. Armed with the irrefutable, ironclad evidence provided by Dr. Evans and the Saint Claire legal team, the authorities did not hesitate for a single second.
Just three days after Richard was unceremoniously escorted out of Emily’s office, the entire city was completely transfixed by the breaking news on every major television network.
Emily stood quietly in the hospital’s crowded staff breakroom, surrounded by dozens of doctors, nurses, and technicians, all staring silently at the large television mounted on the wall.
The live news helicopter footage showed a massive fleet of black, unmarked FBI SUVs and heavily armed federal agents entirely surrounding the towering, glass-fronted headquarters of Vanguard Medical Solutions downtown. Agents in windbreakers were seen carrying endless stacks of cardboard boxes, confiscated computer servers, and hard drives out of the building.
"Breaking news this hour," the serious news anchor announced over the footage. "The FBI, in conjunction with the SEC, has launched a massive, coordinated raid on the headquarters of Vanguard Medical. Federal warrants allege massive corporate fraud, illegal price-fixing of life-saving pediatric medications, and the intentional suppression of dangerous clinical trial data."
The camera suddenly cut to a ground-level shot. Richard Sterling, looking completely disheveled, pale, and thoroughly defeated, was being escorted out of the front doors of his own company, his hands firmly secured in heavy steel handcuffs behind his back.
A collective, massive cheer erupted throughout the hospital breakroom. Nurses hugged each other, doctors clapped loudly, and the entire staff felt a profound, overwhelming sense of absolute vindication.
Nurse Jenkins, wiping a tear of sheer joy from her eye, turned to look at Emily.

"You did it, Emily," Jenkins whispered, her voice thick with immense pride. "You actually took the monster down. You protected us."
Emily looked at the television screen as Richard was shoved roughly into the back of a federal vehicle. She didn't feel any vindictive joy. She only felt a profound, lasting peace. The dragon had finally been slain, and her castle was safe.
