Chapter 8 - The Question Elena Was Afraid to Ask

Elena waited three years before discussing marriage.
Daniel appreciated that.
Lily was eleven.
Confident.
Funny.
Still in therapy occasionally.
Mostly when transitions became hard.
One evening Elena and Daniel sat on the back porch.
“You know I love you.”
Daniel smiled.
“Dangerous opening.”
“I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
She took his hand.
“I don’t know what my role is supposed to become.”
“With Lily?”
“Yes.”
Daniel listened.
“I don’t want to replace Rachel.”
“You couldn’t.”
Elena smiled.
“Good.”
“I mean that kindly.”
“I know.”
“She has a mother.”
“Yes.”
“And she has you.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“But if we marry?”
Daniel understood.
Legal responsibility.
Emergency decisions.
School forms.
Real life.
“We ask Lily.”
Elena looked surprised.
“She’s eleven.”
“She doesn’t decide whether we marry.”
“No.”
“But she gets a voice in what family structure feels safe.”
That weekend, they talked.
Lily stared at them.
“So this is a meeting?”
“Yes.”
“Do I need snacks?”
Daniel brought popcorn.
Lily approved.
Elena explained.
“I love your dad.”
“I know.”
“I love you too.”
Lily looked suspicious.
“Not like a mom?”
Elena smiled.
“Like Elena.”
Lily relaxed.
“Good.”
“If your dad and I marry, some things change.”
“Like taxes?”
Daniel stared.
“Why do you know that?”
“School.”
Elena laughed.
They discussed practical things.
Emergency contacts.
Living arrangements.
Names.
Lily asked:
“Would you adopt me?”
Daniel went still.
Elena answered carefully.
“Only if you ever wanted that and your dad agreed.”
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t.”
Elena nodded.
“Okay.”
No disappointment.
No manipulation.
Just okay.
That answer mattered enormously to Lily.
Two months later, she told Daniel:
“You can marry her.”
Daniel smiled.
“That is not exactly how proposals work.”
“Should I help?”
“No.”
“Your choice.”
He proposed six months later.
Elena said yes.
When they told Lily, she shouted:
“I KNEW IT.”
Then demanded cake.
