Chapter 10: A Cry of Birth After the Storm

I fondly believed the nightmare was entirely behind us, but the severe emotional and physical trauma of that horrific night brought about its own immediate consequences. The intense stress had done its damage. Just after sunrise the following morning, Anna suddenly gasped, her hand gripping mine with a white-knuckled, terrifying intensity. "Jordan... oh god, it hurts... the baby is coming!"
The stress had triggered early labor. Within a matter of minutes, I was sprinting to the car, throwing a packed bag into the back seat, and speeding through the empty morning streets toward the hospital. During that frantic, terrifying drive, absolutely nothing else in the universe existed. Not the bitter arguments of the past, not my toxic mother, not the venomous threats. My entire reality had shrunk down to the woman breathing heavily in the passenger seat and the innocent life fighting to be born.
What followed was a grueling, exhausting twelve-hour marathon in the delivery room. I sat by Anna’s side through every agonizing contraction, holding her hand, letting her squeeze my fingers until they were numb, whispering every word of love and encouragement I possessed.
And then, at precisely 6:42 PM, a sharp, beautiful, piercing cry shattered the sterile air of the room.
The moment I heard that sound, the dam inside me broke. I sank to my knees by the bedside, burying my face in the edge of the mattress, weeping tears of profound, overwhelming relief. Anna was crying too, her face covered in sweat and tears, but radiating a pure, unadulterated joy that I hadn't seen in a lifetime.

The nurse gently wrapped our daughter in a warm blanket and placed her into Anna’s waiting arms. She was absolute perfection—possessing tiny, clutching fingers that immediately hooked around my thumb, a beautiful mop of dark hair, and bright, curious eyes that blinked up at the world. For the first time in nearly a year, Anna smiled a genuine, radiant smile that was completely unmarred by fear.
I genuinely believed our happiness was finally safe, secured within the walls of that hospital room. But then, my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was a call from my stepfather. His voice sounded broken, hollow, and terribly lonely over the crackling line. "Jordan... she’s completely gone. Your mother... she came back to my place while you were at the hospital, packed up every single one of her belongings, withdrew all her money from our joint account, and vanished into the night. I don't know where she is. She’s just... gone."
