Chapter 6: At 3:12 AM

Then came the fateful night that finally tore down the elaborate web of lies and shattered my blind complacency forever.

I woke up with a sudden, violent jolt, my heart pounding erratically against my ribs. There was no loud noise, no sudden crash, just a primal, instinctual alarm bell ringing inside my head. I blinked against the darkness, my eyes slowly focusing on the digital clock resting on the nightstand. The glowing red numbers burned piercingly through the pitch-black room: 3:12 AM.

I lay there for a moment, my mind groggy, trying to identify what had broken my deep sleep. The room was unusually cold, a chilly draft sweeping across the hardwood floor. Moving purely on instinct, I rolled over to my left, extending an arm to pull Anna close to me for warmth.

My hand met nothing but empty, freezing sheets.

I sat up instantly, the fog of sleep entirely vanishing. I scanned the darkness of our bedroom. The en-suite bathroom door was wide open, the interior completely dark and vacant. A heavy, suffocating dread curled tightly in my stomach. I stepped out of bed, my bare feet hitting the cold floorboards, and walked out into the hallway.

As I approached the top of the stairs, faint, muffled noises began to drift upward from the ground floor. It was a chaotic symphony of subtle sounds: the steady, low hiss of running water from the kitchen tap, the sharp, distinct click of a wooden cabinet door being closed too hard, and then, a sound that made my breath catch in my throat.

It was a sob. But it wasn't just ordinary crying; it was a muffled, suffocating, terrified weep of someone completely broken, someone crying into her own hands to prevent the sound from escaping. It was coming from the kitchen.
