Chapter 12 - The dead man’s bargain

Samuel North fired once.

Dr. Mallory collapsed.

The gunshot echoed through the corridor.

Rachel screamed. Trent pulled her toward the stairwell, but Samuel raised the pistol again.

“Stay where you are.”

He stepped over Mallory’s body.

The scar on his chin was new. The square silver watch remained on his wrist.

“You staged your death,” Eleanor said.

“I removed myself from public attention.”

“Someone died in your car.”

“A man whose life was worth less than the opportunity his death created.”

Rachel stared at him in horror.

Samuel smiled.

“Your mother always had a sentimental view of corporate warfare.”

Smoke thickened above them.

“What do you want?” Eleanor asked.

“The plaque.”

“It contains security recordings.”

“It contains Robert’s final encryption key.”

Eleanor looked down at the brass plate.

Robert had designed the hidden system, but he had never explained why the plaque itself mattered.

Samuel continued.

“Your husband copied Northstar’s ownership records before he died. The data would expose every investor, judge, physician, and politician involved in our acquisitions.”

“Then Robert did not die naturally.”

Samuel’s eyes revealed the answer.

Eleanor’s grief sharpened into rage.

“You killed him.”

“I accelerated an existing condition.”

Rachel tightened her grip on Eleanor’s arm.

Trent spoke quietly. “You said no one would be hurt.”

Samuel looked amused.

“I hired a violent man and asked him to steal from his wife’s mother. What outcome did you imagine?”

Trent’s face hardened.

Samuel tossed him a key.

“Take Rachel through the eastern stairwell. Your money is waiting outside.”

Rachel stepped away from her husband.

“I’m not going with you.”

Trent looked at her.

For years, she had obeyed his anger. Now she stood beside her mother with blood in her hair and smoke behind her.

“Rachel,” he said.

“No.”

Samuel raised the gun toward her.

Trent moved between them.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

He fell against the wall.

Rachel dropped beside him despite everything.

Samuel advanced toward Eleanor.

“The plaque.”

She held it out.

As he reached for it, she pressed the hidden switch.

The plate emitted a piercing electronic tone.

Sprinklers activated throughout the corridor.

Emergency doors unlocked.

The lights turned on.

Samuel recoiled.

“You think Robert built a simple archive?” Eleanor said. “The plaque is a beacon.”

Detective Whitman’s voice sounded from the stairwell.

“Police! Drop the weapon!”

Samuel fired toward the sound and ran through a side door.

Officers entered.

Rachel pressed her hands against Trent’s wound.

“He needs help.”

Trent looked at Eleanor.

“I know where the investors meet,” he whispered.

Detective Whitman approached.

“Where?”

“Northstar Tower. Private level beneath the parking garage.”

Samuel had escaped through a service elevator.

Mallory was alive but critically wounded.

Paramedics carried Trent and Rachel from the building while firefighters battled the blaze below.

Eleanor remained long enough to retrieve the plaque.

A section of brass had opened after the alarm.

Inside was a thin crystal key.

Martin had said Robert’s archive required Eleanor’s access code.

Samuel believed the plaque contained the final encryption key.

Both had been partly correct.

The crystal was engraved with a date.

The day Robert died.

Back at Hale House, technicians connected it to the hidden monitor.

A password prompt appeared.

Eleanor entered Robert’s final words to her.

Remember who you were before fear.

The archive opened.

Thousands of files filled the screen.

Payments.

Medical reports.

Secret recordings.

At the top was a video dated three days before Robert’s death.

Robert appeared seated in the library.

“If you are watching this, Ellie, Samuel North has already made his move. Do not trust the board vote. Do not trust Martin. And above all, do not trust the person Rachel brings into this house.”

The screen changed.

A photograph of Trent appeared.

Then another image loaded beside it.

Rachel.

Below her photograph was a file labeled:

RACHEL HALE — ORIGINAL RECRUITMENT CONTACT.

Eleanor stopped breathing.

The metadata showed that Rachel had communicated with Samuel North six months before she met Trent.

👉 Robert’s archive proved Trent had been recruited to manipulate Rachel, but the next file suggested Eleanor’s own daughter had entered the conspiracy first.
