Chapter 7 - The hidden room

The brass key was no longer than Eleanor’s thumb.
She concealed it inside the linen napkin and carried it upstairs after Trent announced that Dr. Mallory would return in the morning with two psychiatric transport officers.
“You’ll spend a few weeks in a private facility,” he said. “For your safety.”
Rachel’s face tightened.
Eleanor nodded as though too tired to resist.
At midnight, Trent locked Eleanor’s bedroom from the outside.
He did not know the room contained a second door.
The narrow passage behind the wardrobe had been built during Prohibition and later sealed. Robert reopened it during renovations, using the hidden corridor to connect their bedroom to a storage room behind the library.
Eleanor waited until the house became quiet.
Then she pushed aside the wardrobe panel.
Rachel stood in the corridor holding a flashlight.
“How did you know about this?”
“Dad showed me when I was twelve.”
“You never told Trent?”
“I never told anyone.”
They moved through dust and darkness until they reached the hidden room.
The brass key opened a metal cabinet built into the wall.
Inside were ledgers, encrypted drives, photographs, and a sealed letter addressed to Eleanor.
Robert’s handwriting covered the front.
Eleanor sat on an old crate and opened it.
My dearest Ellie,
If Martin gives you this key, someone has attempted to seize the family voting trust. Do not assume the threat comes from outside the company.
Eleanor paused.
Rachel read over her shoulder.
Robert’s letter described irregular payments made during the final year of his life. A group of board members had attempted to force a merger with Northstar Health Holdings. Robert blocked the sale.
After his death, Eleanor inherited the deciding shares.
“Mr. North,” Rachel whispered.
Eleanor continued reading.
Northstar was controlled through shell companies. Robert had traced several of them to Trent Mercer’s former employer.
Trent had not married Rachel by coincidence.
The realization broke something inside Eleanor.
“How long?” she asked.
Rachel shook her head. “I don’t know.”
Robert’s letter included a warning about Martin Greer.
Martin knows enough to help you, but trust evidence before friendship.
At the bottom of the cabinet lay a small monitor connected to the house’s independent security network.
Eleanor turned it on.
Six hidden camera feeds appeared.
The foyer.
The kitchen.
The library.
The upstairs hallway.
The basement utility room.
Robert’s bedroom.
Trent lay awake on the bed, scrolling through Eleanor’s financial accounts on his laptop.
The camera had recorded everything.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“He said the system was disconnected.”
“He disconnected the network he could see.”
Eleanor inserted one of Robert’s encrypted drives into the monitor. A folder opened automatically.
MERCER PROJECT.
It contained background reports on Trent dating back eight years.
Bankrupt developments.
Lawsuits.
Assault allegations.
A sealed settlement involving a former girlfriend who had suffered a broken jaw.
Rachel turned away.
“I should have known.”
“You were chosen because you trusted him.”
“No. I ignored things.”
“Shame is how men like Trent keep women silent.”
A warning icon flashed on the monitor.
MOTION DETECTED: LIBRARY.
Trent entered the room below.
He approached the bookcase concealing the hidden chamber.
Eleanor and Rachel froze.
On-screen, Trent moved directly toward the correct shelf.
“He knows,” Rachel whispered.
“No. He suspects.”
Trent removed books one at a time.
The hidden door was less than three feet from him.
Eleanor searched the cabinet and found an old control switch labeled FIRE SUPPRESSION TEST.
She pressed it.
Alarms erupted throughout the house.
Water sprayed from ceiling nozzles in the library.
Trent shouted and ran for the hallway.
Eleanor shut off the system.
Rachel laughed once, breathlessly.
Then the hidden monitor changed.
A new camera feed appeared automatically.
It showed the front gate.
A man stood outside beneath an umbrella.
Dr. Mallory.
He had arrived six hours early.
Beside him were two men in dark uniforms.
One carried a medical restraint bag.
The other held papers bearing a court seal.
The front door opened.
May you like
Trent had already let them in.
👉 Eleanor discovered the evidence hidden behind her walls, but the men entering before dawn had legal authority to remove her—and one of them carried a syringe.
