Chapter 5 - BROOKE’S VIDEO

Brooke contacted me through her attorney.
That told me everything before the meeting began.
She had video.
Not the entire assault.
Enough.
She had been recording a New Year’s toast when Grant began arguing with me.
The video showed Ryan grabbing my wrists.
Clear.
Then Grant stepping close.
The camera dropped toward the tabletop when Brooke gasped.
But the audio continued.
My scream.
Grant:
This is what happens when a wife forgets who runs this family.
Ryan:
Stop fighting.
Diane:
She brought this on herself.
Then my voice:
You hurt a pregnant woman.
I listened once.
Never again.
Brooke cried.
“I should’ve stopped him.”
“Yes.”
She looked surprised.
Maybe she expected comfort.
I was done giving adults reassurance before truth.
She continued:
“I froze.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t know Dad would actually do it.”
“Did you know Ryan was going to hold me?”
“No.”
“Did you know they were planning to confront me?”
Silence.
There.
“What did you know?”
Brooke wiped her face.
“Dad was angry about the business loan.”
My stomach dropped.
“He knew?”
“He thought you were refusing to support Ryan.”
Of course.
Ryan had told them.
Not that I did not know about the loan.
That I refused it.
Brooke continued:
“Dad kept saying you needed to learn that marriage meant backing your husband.”
“And the dinner?”
She looked down.
“He said New Year’s was the right time to settle it.”
Settle it.
My skin crawled.
“What did Ryan say?”
“He told Dad not to make a scene.”
For one hopeful second, that sounded better.
Then Brooke finished:
“But he also said if you got stubborn, he’d handle you.”
There it was.
The confrontation had not been fully spontaneous.
Maybe nobody planned the cigarette.
But they planned pressure.
Ryan planned control.
The distinction mattered.
Brooke handed the recording to investigators.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.”
I believed her.
That did not mean she entered my life again.
Not yet.
