Chapter 7 - LILY ASKED ABOUT BLOOD

Lily was nine when she finally asked:

“Why does Grandma Ida care about blood so much?”

We were eating breakfast.

Glen nearly choked on coffee.

I answered carefully.

“Some people believe being related biologically is the most important kind of family connection.”

“Is it?”

“Sometimes biological family is wonderful.”

Then:

“But love, safety, responsibility, and showing up matter too.”

She looked at Glen.

“You’re not my blood.”

“Nope.”

“You still came to my dentist appointment.”

“Yes.”

“And my school play.”

“Yes.”

“And you know I hate peas.”

“Deeply.”

She smiled.

“Then Grandma’s rule is dumb.”

Glen laughed.

“I’m not going to argue with your logic.”

Neither was I.
