CHAPTER 19: THE LAST SHIELD

CHAPTER 19: THE LAST SHIELD
The foundation lobby was a wreck of shattered glass and overturned furniture. The rain poured through the broken entrance, soaking the hardwood floor. I dropped to my knees near the center crest, counting the tiles from the threshold. Nine. Fourteen. Eleven. I slammed the edge of the tire iron beneath the marble seam, prying the tile upward with a sickening crack. Beneath the mortar sat a small, vacuum-sealed titanium container. Our mother's final shield. "Drop it, Evelyn." I turned slowly. Christian Sterling stood in the doorway of the office. He held a silenced handgun, his expression entirely focused, his grey suit splattered with rainwater and drywall dust. "You've been a very resilient adversary," he said, raising the weapon. "But the game ends now." Before he could pull the trigger, a shape blurred through the shadows. Our father threw his frail body directly in front of the barrel. Phut. Phut. The silenced shots were sickeningly quiet. My father collapsed to the floor with a heavy groan, his hand clutching his chest. But as he fell, he revealed Hannah standing behind him. She didn't fire a weapon. She simply held up her laptop screen, which was flashing a solid, glowing blue. UPLOAD COMPLETE. GLOBAL BROADCAST PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. The metadata hadn't just been sent to the prosecutors. Hannah had routed the project horizon files through the foundation's public donor network, broadcasting Christian’s offshore account numbers, cartel contracts, and backdated murder authorizations to every major news outlet in the world simultaneously. The sirens in the distance weren't just local police. They were a federal convoy, their tires screeching as they surrounded the Sterling Tower downtown and the foundation property simultaneously. Christian looked at the laptop screen. For the first time since he had arrived in Chicago, the clinical calm left his face. His eyes widened in a sudden, paralyzed horror. He dropped the weapon, stepping backward into the rain as the glare of federal spotlights illuminated the broken lobby. The Sterling empire had vanished in a single second.
