CHAPTER 6: THE SILENT ARCHITECT

CHAPTER 6: THE SILENT ARCHITECT
We spent three days analyzing the contents of the iron box. Every tape. Every ledger entry. Every line of code on the old hard drives. The truth was far worse than a simple family embezzlement. Twenty years ago, Hannah had discovered a massive offshore shell network. A network used by Sterling Global to launder capital through our father's mid-sized accounting firm. Our father hadn't known. He was too trusting. Too blinded by Arthur Sterling's prestige. But Preston had found out. And instead of protecting our father, Preston went to Arthur. He offered a trade. "I can make my sister look like the thief," Preston had written in a recovered email transcript. "I can make her disappear." "In exchange, I want a guaranteed seat at your table." Arthur Sterling had agreed. They fabricated the evidence of theft against Hannah. They staged the dramatic confrontation that broke our family. They drove a terrified eighteen-year-old girl into hiding, letting her believe her own blood wanted her dead. And for two decades, Preston collected his percentage from Sterling's offshore yields. Seven million dollars. Paid out in small, untraceable increments. I looked out the window at Sophie, who was drawing a picture of a sunlit house on the chalkboard. "Arthur Sterling is the reason our family was destroyed," I said, my teeth clenched. Hannah nodded. Her eyes were cold. Lethal. "Preston was just the weapon, Evy." "Arthur was the hand that held it." Suddenly, my phone rang. An unknown number. I answered, pressing the speaker button. "Evelyn," a smooth, ancient voice purred through the line. Arthur Sterling. "I see you received my delivery." "Why did you send this to us, Arthur?" I demanded. A dry, humorless chuckle came from the speaker. "Because Preston is trying to cut a deal with the prosecutors from his cell." "He wants to give me up to reduce his sentence." "I am a practical man, Evelyn. I am letting you know that if you hand that box to the FBI, your father goes down with me." "His signature is on every contract from 2006." "Think very carefully before you try to save your sister again." "You might just destroy your father instead." The line went dead.
