Chapter 23 - The Original Sin

“You are lying,” Luca said, stepping between Vivian and me. His voice was a low, dangerous rumble. “Antonio Moretti had one daughter. She died shortly after birth. The records are sealed.”

Vivian let out a dry, humorless laugh.

“Oh, Luca. The golden boy,” she mocked, tilting her head. “Did you really think your precious Antonio was above forging a death certificate? Above paying off a hospital administrator to erase a child who didn't fit into his perfect, ruthless succession plan?”

Alessandra let out a choked sob.

Vivian’s gaze snapped to the older woman, turning instantly venomous.

“Hello, Mother,” Vivian said. “You look surprised to see me. Did you really think you could throw away a child and never face the consequences?”

“I had no choice,” Alessandra wept, refusing to meet her eyes. “He told me you were sick. He told me you wouldn't survive the night. By the morning, he said it was over.”

“He lied!” Vivian shouted, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second. “He sent me away to a boarding school in Switzerland! He erased my name, stripped my inheritance, and handed the entire empire to his nephew, Luca, because he wanted a man to run the syndicate!”

I stood frozen, processing the sheer magnitude of the betrayal. Antonio Moretti had been a monster, but this level of cruelty was staggering.

“Why come back now?” I asked. “Antonio is dead. The syndicate is dismantled.”

Vivian turned back to me, adjusting her coat.

“Because the money isn't gone, Emma,” she said coldly. “Luca liquidated the companies, but the core trust fund—the billions Antonio hoarded—is locked behind a bloodline clause. A clause that requires the signature of his direct descendants.”

“Eleanor is his descendant,” Luca pointed out defensively.

“Yes,” Vivian agreed. “But so am I. And according to the true will, which I recovered from a Swiss vault last week, the estate must be split evenly among all surviving children. Which means half of everything Luca currently controls legally belongs to me.”

She reached into her pocket, ignoring the sudden tensing of the security guards behind her, and pulled out a folded legal document.

“I didn't come here for a family reunion, Emma. I came to collect my billions.”
