Chapter 36 - The Waiting Game

|

The sterile, white walls of the emergency room waiting area felt suffocatingly familiar.

I sat in a hard plastic chair, wrapped in a thin hospital blanket, staring blankly at the double doors leading to the surgical wing. My mother, Eleanor, sat quietly beside me, holding my trembling hand, while Alessandra paced the length of the corridor, muttering desperate prayers in Italian.

It had been four agonizing hours since they wheeled Luca into surgery.

“He is strong, Emma,” my mother whispered, trying to offer comfort. “He survived the syndicate. He can survive this.”

I simply nodded, unable to form words. If I lost him now, after everything we had built, after the beautiful life we had fought so desperately to secure for Grace... it would break me completely.

Finally, the heavy double doors swung open. A tired-looking surgeon in green scrubs stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask.

I jumped to my feet, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm.

“Is he...?” I choked out, unable to finish the sentence.

“Mr. Moretti is currently in the recovery room,” the surgeon said, offering a small, reassuring smile. “The bullet passed cleanly through the upper shoulder, narrowly missing the subclavian artery. He lost a significant amount of blood, but we successfully repaired the tissue damage. He is stable, and he is going to make a full recovery.”

A profound, overwhelming wave of relief crashed over me. My knees buckled slightly, and my mother had to catch my arm to keep me steady.

“Can I see him?” I asked, tears of profound joy welling in my eyes.

“He is still heavily sedated, but yes. You can go in,” the surgeon nodded.

I practically ran down the hallway, bursting into the quiet, dimly lit recovery room.

Luca lay in the hospital bed, looking incredibly pale and exhausted, an IV line taped securely to his hand. His chest rose and fell in a steady, comforting rhythm.

I sat gently on the very edge of the bed and carefully took his uninjured hand, pressing it tightly to my lips.

His dark eyes slowly fluttered open. He blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights, his gaze finally finding my face.

“Hey,” he rasped, his voice incredibly weak but filled with immense love.

“Hey yourself, you reckless idiot,” I whispered, crying softly, resting my forehead against his. “Don't you ever, ever do that to me again.”

Luca smiled weakly, his thumb weakly brushing away my tears.

“I told you I’d stand beside you, Emma,” he murmured. “I meant it.”
