Chapter 1 — The Man Behind the Headlights
The mansion fell into complete silence.
Outside, six black SUVs rolled through the iron gates as if they already owned the estate.
Adrian frowned.
"I didn't invite anyone."
Vanessa slowly stood, her confidence wavering for the first time that evening.
The front doors opened before anyone could reach them.
A dozen security officers entered with disciplined precision.
Not one of them looked at Adrian.
Every pair of eyes turned toward Evelyn.
The leader stopped a few feet away and bowed his head.
"Miss Evelyn."
"We're sorry we arrived after you were hurt."
Adrian laughed nervously.
"What is this? Who gave you permission to enter my house?"
The older man finally faced him.
"Your house?"
His expression remained perfectly calm.
"The ownership transfer was completed three hours ago."
Adrian froze.
"What are you talking about?"
The security chief handed Evelyn a leather folder.
She quietly opened it.
Inside were property records, banking authorizations, and corporate documents.
Every signature belonged to Adrian.
Every document proved the same thing.
Years earlier, desperate for investment capital, Adrian had unknowingly signed financing agreements through companies secretly owned by Evelyn's family trust.
He had believed anonymous investors were funding his empire.
He never bothered to learn who actually controlled them.
The loans had matured.
The collateral had been claimed.
Everything.
The mansion.
The company headquarters.
The luxury cars.
Even the private jet.
They no longer belonged to Adrian Vale.
"They belong to the Hawthorne Family Office," the security chief said.
"And Miss Evelyn is the sole trustee."
Vanessa stared at Evelyn.
"You... planned this?"
Evelyn slowly closed the folder.
"No."
"I simply stopped protecting a man determined to destroy himself."
Adrian lunged toward her.
Two security officers stepped between them before he had taken his second step.
His authority had vanished in seconds.
