Chapter 8 - OLIVER’S NINTH BIRTHDAY

Oliver turned nine at a bowling alley.
His choice.
Ten children.
Two pizzas.
A cake shaped like a badly drawn bowling pin because I made it myself.
He loved it.
No surprise cakes.
No shared candles.
No family announcements.
Lily attended.
Because Oliver invited her.
Jenna did not.
Rick brought Lily and left after confirming pickup time.
Halfway through the party, Lily handed Oliver a small box.
Inside was a Mario keychain.
And a note written in six-year-old handwriting:
THIS PRESENT IS ONLY FOR OLIVER.
I had to turn away.
Jules saw it.
“You okay?”
“Yep.”
“You’re crying.”
“Bowling alley air.”
“Sure.”
Oliver hugged Lily.
Then they went back to arguing about bumpers.
That was childhood.
Not family politics.
Just children.
May you like
Exactly what they deserved.
