Chapter 12 - The Subpoena Threat

|

The success of Evelyn’s injunction sent shockwaves through the local corporate legal community. For years, powerful men had used financial exhaustion as a weapon to force battered spouses into unfair settlements. Now, the Sterling Foundation Legal Clinic was dismantling those traps one by one.

By Thursday afternoon, the backlash arrived in the form of a heavily scented, expensive cream envelope delivered by a personal courier.

I was reviewing a stack of intake forms when Sarah brought the envelope into my office, laying it carefully on the edge of my glass desk.

"It's from Harrison & Cross," Sarah said, her voice tight with caution. "Arthur Harrison himself is representing Evelyn’s husband. He’s one of the most ruthless divorce litigators in the state."

I picked up the heavy parchment paper, sliding my silver letter opener beneath the flap. Inside was a formal motion to vacate our emergency injunction, accompanied by a blistering letter accusing the foundation of malicious interference and threatening a multi-million-dollar defamation counter-suit against me personally.

"He’s trying to intimidate us," I noted calmly, scanning the aggressive legal jargon without a single flicker of anxiety. "He thinks a fancy letterhead and a threat of financial ruin will make us drop the case."

"Should I call our lead counsel?" Sarah asked, reaching for her phone.

"Call Marcus," I corrected, a slow, confident smile spreading across my face. "Tell him the sharks are circling, and we need our best forensic accountant to audit the husband’s secondary shell companies by tomorrow morning."

Marcus arrived at the clinic an hour later, carrying a briefcase overflowing with encrypted financial records. He walked into my office, pulled up a chair, and tossed a series of highlighted tax documents onto my desk.

"Harrison is playing a very dangerous game," Marcus said, tapping his pen against a document. "I dug into the husband's corporate holdings. Not only did he hide funds in overseas accounts, but he actively committed perjury in his initial asset disclosure form."

"Can we prove it?" I asked, leaning forward.

"Beyond a shadow of a doubt," Marcus grinned, his eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction. "The digital footprint is wide open. If Harrison pushes this motion in court tomorrow, we aren't just going to defend Evelyn's injunction. We are going to blow his client's entire financial empire wide open."

"Good," I said, standing up and walking over to the wall where my repaired maternity dress hung inside its custom frame. I traced the golden threads with my fingertips. "Let's teach them that intimidation doesn't work on people who have already survived the worst."
