Chapter 15 - The Corporate Backlash

|
As our legal victories mounted and our public profile surged, the powerful corporate networks protecting wealthy abusers began to push back. They realized that our clinic wasn't just winning individual divorce cases; we were successfully dismantling the hidden financial structures that allowed powerful men to conceal their assets and starve their families out of court.
The retaliation came on a crisp autumn morning in the form of a massive, multi-count civil lawsuit filed against the Sterling Foundation.
I was reviewing payroll documents when Sarah burst into my office, her face completely drained of color.
"You need to see this right now," she stammered, handing me a thick stack of court filings bearing the seal of the federal district court.
I took the papers, scanning the bold typeface at the top. A coalition of elite corporate law firms—the exact ones representing the abusive spouses we had successfully litigated against—had filed a joint lawsuit. They were accusing our foundation of unauthorized practice of law, tortious interference with business contracts, and aggressive defamation. They were demanding an immediate restraining order to shut down our operations and freeze our assets.
"They are trying to bankrupt us with legal fees before we ever make it to a courtroom," Sarah whispered, her hands trembling. "They want to cut off our funding and lock our doors permanently."
I set the papers down on my desk, my jaw tightening into a fierce, unyielding line. The old fear tried to creep in, whispering that I was just a woman fighting a giant machine that couldn't be beaten. But I looked back at the maternity dress on the wall, and the fear instantly evaporated, replaced by cold, calculated resolve.
"They think we are a fragile charity they can crush with a few threatening motions," I said, my voice dropping to a calm, dangerous register. "They forgot that I spent years inside their world. I know exactly how their secret boys' clubs operate."

"What do we do?" Sarah asked, her panic receding as she watched my composure.
"We call Marcus," I instructed smoothly. "And we call every single high-powered appellate attorney who owes us a favor. We aren't just going to defend this lawsuit, Sarah. We are going to file a massive cross-complaint exposing their systemic collusion to hide marital assets from domestic abuse victims. Let's see how much they enjoy fighting us in the open sun."
