Chapter 6 - MELISSA FINALLY LOST CONTROL OF THE STORY

Melissa did not like losing control of Jason.

Or Alyssa.

Especially when they began questioning her version of events.

She sent me a long email.

Subject:

STOP MANIPULATING MY CHILDREN

I forwarded it to Lena unopened.

Lena called.

“You want the summary?”

“Yes.”

“Melissa says you are alienating the children from her.”

I laughed.

“They don’t live with me.”

“I know.”

“She says your financial claims are designed to embarrass her.”

“I’m tracing my money.”

“I know.”

“She also says you should reimburse Daniel for years of free housing provided to his children.”

I stared.

“My house.”

“Correct.”

“Where I paid the mortgage.”

“Correct.”

“The children’s housing was their father’s responsibility.”

“Correct.”

I leaned back.

“Anything useful?”

“One sentence.”

“What?”

Lena read it.

Daniel and I agreed years ago that Rachel could afford to contribute more, so we organized expenses accordingly.

I went still.

“Organized.”

“Yes.”

“Save that.”

“Already did.”

Melissa had accidentally admitted coordinated allocation of expenses involving my money.

Not illegal by itself.

But relevant.

Especially when paired with deception.

Then Jason made his own decision.

He moved primarily to Daniel’s townhouse.

Not because Daniel was blameless.

Because Jason said living with Melissa had become:

“Too much about whose side I’m on.”

Alyssa remained mostly with Melissa.

Then began spending more time with Daniel too.

Their parents were forced to communicate directly.

No Rachel buffer.

No Rachel chauffeur.

No Rachel wallet.

No Rachel to blame for rules.

Within months, Daniel told me during mediation:

“Melissa and I argue constantly now.”

I stared.

“You always did.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You absorbed a lot of it.”

Exactly.

Every time Melissa demanded something, Daniel had redirected pressure toward me.

Every time his children wanted more, I paid to prevent conflict.

Every time household tension rose, I worked harder.

Once I left the system, the adults had to carry their own weight.

That was not revenge.
