Chapter 1: The Shattered Glass

The heavy atmosphere inside the private hospital suite grew suffocating long before the physical violence began. Khloe Thorne stood near the large glass windows, her hand instinctively resting on her swollen abdomen. She was seven months pregnant, and the exhaustion of the evening was weighing heavily on her. Downstairs, the St. Jude Hospital fundraising gala was in full swing, a symphony of clinking champagne glasses, loud laughter, and oppressive waves of expensive perfume. Khloe had fled the crowd, seeking a moment of quiet, but peace was not what she found.
Isabella Rossi stood just a few feet away, blocking the exit. Clad in a crimson silk dress that stood out like a drop of blood against the sterile white walls of the suite, Isabella possessed the absolute certainty of someone who believed she held all the cards. For months, she had tortured Khloe with subtle torments: lingering glances at Khloe’s husband Marcus, cruel comments disguised as polite conversation, and small smiles that communicated a devastating secret. Now, the mask of high society elegance was completely gone.
"You were supposed to stay quiet," Isabella hissed, her voice sharp and filled with venom. "You were supposed to smile for the cameras, have the baby, and then quietly disappear from Marcus’s life."
Khloe pressed herself backward, feeling the cold edge of a wooden side table bite into her lower back. She looked at the woman who had systematically dismantled her marriage. "Get out of this room, Isabella. Leave me alone."
Instead of leaving, Isabella stepped forward with terrifying speed. She extended both hands and shoved Khloe hard against the chest.

Khloe lost her footing completely. Her spine collided violently with the table, and she cried out as a sharp pain radiated through her lower back. On the table, a lone champagne glass wobbled, fell, and shattered into hundreds of glittering shards across the carpet. Before Khloe could even attempt to stand, Isabella moved in again, her face twisted in pure rage. Raising her leg, she drove the pointed metal toe of her high heel directly into Khloe’s side.
A blinding, white hot agony ripped through Khloe’s abdomen. She collapsed onto the floor, folding herself around her belly. In that terrifying moment, her thoughts did not belong to herself. She prayed with every fiber of her being for the safety of her unborn son.
