Chapter 4: The Price of Clarity

Before formal criminal charges were officially filed with the court, the police allowed Marcus one brief, supervised meeting with Isabella in the precinct interview room.
The woman sitting across from him bore little resemblance to the glamorous socialite from the gala. Her expensive red dress was wrinkled, her perfect hair was disheveled, and her smeared makeup made her look hollow. Yet, her armor of arrogance remained intact.
"Was any of it real?" Marcus asked, his voice hollow. "Any of the time we spent together?"
Isabella let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Please, Marcus. You wanted someone ruthless enough to worship the empire you are building. I gave you exactly what you desired."
"You kicked a pregnant woman," Marcus said, his voice shaking with disgust.
Isabella narrowed her eyes, her expression turning ice cold. "She was simply collateral damage. She got in the way."
That single word destroyed the final remnants of Marcus’s illusions. He stood up, a wave of profound nausea washing over him.
"No," Marcus said firmly. "She was my wife. And you did not destroy her, Isabella. You simply exposed exactly who I am."
As Marcus walked out of the room, the heavy iron door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing through the corridor like a final judgment. By mid morning, the district attorney had processed charges against Isabella for aggravated assault, corporate conspiracy, and grand larceny, ensuring she would never return to the high society life she had weaponized.
Upstairs in the hospital, the world was completely quiet. Khloe lay in a private recovery room, the rhythmic, steady hum of the fetal monitor providing a comforting soundtrack. She kept her hand placed gently over her stomach, listening to the steady beat of her son’s heart. She was starting to understand a painful truth: surviving a tragedy is not the same thing as forgiving the person who caused it.
Khloe remained hospitalized for six full days. While her physical bruises slowly turned dark and the contractions eventually stopped, her mind remained fixed on a single, indelible memory. She remembered Marcus entering that room and looking at the public relations crisis before he ever looked at his injured wife on the floor.
Physical pain would eventually fade away. But the clarity she gained from that moment would last forever.

Robert ensured her absolute privacy. He placed trusted security guards outside her door, hired a top tier family law attorney, and made sure every single medical report and police statement was perfectly preserved. He never forced his advice upon her. He simply sat by her bed and reminded her that whatever path she chose next, she would not be making her decision from a place of weakness.
By the day Marcus was finally granted permission to speak with her, Khloe had already achieved total certainty about two distinct things: her son was going to live, and her marriage was completely dead.
