PART 2: The Secret Robert Never Expected

The delivery room became completely silent.

The kind of silence that felt heavier than any scream.

Joanna stared at Dr. Robert Wright, confused and frightened.

The doctor who had just entered the room with complete confidence was now standing frozen beside her newborn son.

His eyes moved between her and the baby.

Like he was seeing a ghost.

“Doctor?” the nurse asked again carefully.

“Are you alright?”

Robert didn’t answer.

His fingers tightened around the medical chart.

His entire world had shifted in a matter of seconds.

Because the baby in front of him carried a secret he never thought he would face again.

A secret connected to the only person who had ever truly broken his heart.

“Who is the father?” he asked again.

This time his voice was quieter.

Almost afraid.

Joanna swallowed.

She looked down at her baby.

The little boy was sleeping peacefully, unaware that the adults around him were falling apart.

“His name is Logan Wright.”

The words hit Robert like a physical blow.

The color drained from his face.

The nurse looked between them.

“Logan Wright?”

Robert stepped back.

“No…”

He whispered it like he was trying to convince himself.

“No, that’s not possible.”

Joanna’s eyebrows tightened.

“Doctor, what are you saying?”

Robert looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time, Joanna noticed something strange.

The doctor wasn’t looking at her like a medical professional.

He was looking at her like someone from his past.

Like someone he had been searching for.

“Logan Wright,” Robert repeated.

“That’s my son.”

The room went still.

Joanna’s breath caught.

The nurse slowly lowered the baby blanket.

“Your son?”

Robert nodded faintly.

“Yes.”

He looked at the newborn again.

The baby’s tiny fingers moved.

The same way Logan’s had when he was a child.

Robert remembered.

He remembered holding his son for the first time.

A little boy who used to run through the hospital hallways waiting for him to finish work.

A little boy who once promised:

“Dad, when I grow up, I’ll be a doctor too.”

But somewhere along the way, Logan changed.

He became distant.

Angry.

Cold.

And after a terrible argument three years earlier, he disappeared from Robert’s life.

They had not spoken since.

Robert had always believed Logan left because he was selfish.

Now he wondered if there had been something else.

Something he never knew.

Joanna watched the doctor carefully.

“You’re Logan’s father?”

Robert nodded.

“I am.”

Her face changed.

A mixture of shock and confusion.

“But why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”

Robert looked away.

Because the truth was complicated.

He had seen that face before.

Not the baby.

Joanna.

Years ago.

Before she knew Logan.

Before all of this.

“You don’t remember me,” Robert said.

Joanna frowned.

“Should I?”

Robert hesitated.

Then he slowly sat down.

“My wife worked at the hospital where you volunteered.”

Joanna searched her memory.

Then her eyes widened slightly.

“Elizabeth?”

Robert nodded.

“Yes.”

The name brought back an old memory.

A kind woman.

A nurse who had always encouraged Joanna when she was younger.

“I knew you through her,” Robert continued.

“But you were just a teenager then.”

Joanna looked down.

“So you knew me before?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And I knew you were a good person.”

His voice softened.

“But I never imagined my son would meet you.”

Joanna looked at her baby.

Her heart was racing.

“So Logan knew who you were?”

Robert’s expression darkened.

“Yes.”

“He knew I was his father.”

The words that followed hurt.

“Then why did he leave me?”

Robert didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that terrified him.

A nurse entered the room holding a folder.

“Doctor Wright?”

Robert turned.

“We need the newborn paperwork.”

The nurse glanced at the baby.

“Congratulations, by the way.”

She smiled at Joanna.

Then looked at Robert.

The smile faded.

Because she noticed the tension.

Robert nodded.

“I’ll handle it.”

After the nurse left, Joanna finally spoke.

“I need the truth.”

Robert looked at her.

“About what?”

“About Logan.”

Her voice shook.

“He abandoned me when I told him I was pregnant.”

Robert’s expression changed.

“He did what?”

“He left.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Almost angry.

“That’s not like him.”

Joanna laughed bitterly.

“Then you don’t know him.”

Robert looked at her.

Maybe she was right.

Maybe he had spent years believing he knew his son when he didn’t.

“Did he know you were here?”

Joanna looked down.

“No.”

“Did you tell him?”

“I tried.”

Her eyes filled.

“He blocked my number.”

That hurt Robert more than he expected.

Because suddenly, his son wasn’t the victim in his mind.

He was the person who had caused pain.

And that was difficult for a father to accept.

Then Joanna noticed something.

A small object hanging from Robert’s neck.

A silver chain.

With a tiny engraved charm.

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Robert touched it.

“This?”

Joanna slowly reached for her own necklace.

The exact same charm.

Her voice became a whisper.

“My mother gave me that.”

Robert froze.

“What?”

Joanna removed the necklace.

“My grandmother made it.”

Robert stared.

Because he recognized it.

Impossible.

“You have the same one?”

Joanna nodded.

“My mother said there were two.”

Robert looked at the necklace.

Then at Joanna.

Then at the baby.

And suddenly another thought entered his mind.

A thought that made his heart pound.

“Joanna…”

She looked at him.

“What?”

Robert’s voice dropped.

“Did Logan ever tell you about his mother?”

Joanna shook her head.

“No.”

Robert stood slowly.

“Because my wife…”

He swallowed.

“Elizabeth had a sister.”

Joanna’s face changed.

“What are you saying?”

Robert stared at the necklace.

The old family symbol.

A symbol he thought belonged only to his family.

But now it was around Joanna’s neck too.

“Joanna…”

His voice trembled.

“There’s something you need to know.”

He looked at the baby.

Then back at her.

“Logan didn’t just choose you by accident.”

A pause.

“He may have known something neither of us knew.”

The room went cold.

Because for the first time, Joanna wondered…

Maybe Logan didn’t leave because he didn’t love her.

Maybe he left because he was hiding something.

May you like

And whatever that secret was…

It was connected to both of their families.
