PART 3: The Truth Logan Tried to Hide

For the first time in months, Joanna felt something stronger than sadness.

Confusion.

A painful, terrifying confusion.

Because everything she believed about Logan was beginning to crack.

She had spent seven months telling herself the same story.

He left because he was afraid.

He left because he didn’t love her enough.

He left because their baby was a burden.

But standing in that hospital room, holding the newborn son she had fought so hard to protect, she wasn’t sure anymore.

“Doctor Wright…”

Her voice was quiet.

“But that doesn’t make sense.”

Robert looked at her.

“I know.”

“Logan never told me anything about his family.”

Robert sighed.

“That’s exactly what worries me.”

He walked toward the window, staring at the city outside.

“My son was never good at talking about emotions. He kept everything inside.”

Joanna looked down at the baby.

“Then why propose to me?”

Robert didn’t answer immediately.

Because he knew the truth would hurt.

“Because Logan loved you.”

The words surprised her.

She looked up.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Robert turned back.

“I watched my son change after meeting you.”

A faint smile crossed his face.

“Before you, he was angry all the time. He pushed everyone away. He blamed me for things that happened in our family.”

Joanna swallowed.

“Then why did he leave?”

Robert’s expression became serious.

“I don’t know.”

And that was the part that frightened him.

Because Robert Wright had spent his entire life believing he could solve anything.

But his own family had become a mystery.

The baby suddenly moved.

A tiny cry escaped.

Joanna immediately leaned forward.

“It’s okay.”

Her voice softened.

“I’m here.”

Robert watched her.

And something about the scene broke him.

Because she was alone.

His son had left her alone.

And yet she was still protecting the child.

Still loving him.

Still believing in something.

A feeling he had not seen in years.

The same feeling Elizabeth had.

“Joanna.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

“I need to find Logan.”

Her face tightened.

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“I don’t want him near my son.”

Robert understood.

After everything she had been through, she had every reason to feel that way.

“But you deserve answers.”

She looked away.

“I already have them.”

“You think you do.”

The words hung between them.

Robert stepped closer.

“Seven months ago, before Logan disappeared, he came to see me.”

Joanna froze.

“He did?”

Robert nodded.

“He was scared.”

“Scared?”

“Yes.”

Joanna stared.

“Of what?”

Robert hesitated.

Then reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I kept this because I didn’t understand it.”

Joanna looked at the paper.

“What is it?”

“Something Logan left behind.”

She opened it carefully.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her heart immediately recognized it.

Logan’s handwriting.

The note was short.

Dad,

If something happens, protect them.

Protect Joanna.

Protect my child.

Don’t let them find out.

Joanna stopped breathing.

Her fingers trembled.

“Don’t let who find out?”

Robert shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

A cold feeling spread through her.

This wasn’t a man running away.

This was a man afraid.

A man who believed something dangerous was coming.

Suddenly, Robert’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?” Joanna asked.

Robert didn’t answer.

Because the name on the screen was impossible.

Logan.

The call lasted only three seconds.

Robert answered.

“Logan?”

Silence.

Then a broken voice.

“Dad.”

Robert stood instantly.

“Where are you?”

Another pause.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Joanna’s heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

Even after seven months.

She knew it.

“Logan?”

Robert looked at her.

The phone was still connected.

A whisper came through.

“Is she there?”

Robert froze.

Joanna stepped closer.

Her hands shaking.

“Logan…”

Silence.

Then his voice cracked.

“Joanna.”

The sound of his name on his lips almost destroyed her.

Seven months of anger.

Seven months of pain.

All came rushing back.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Why did you leave me?”

There was a long silence.

Then Logan answered:

“Because someone was watching you.”

The room became cold.

“What?”

Joanna stared at the phone.

Logan continued.

“I found out the truth about my family.”

Robert’s face changed.

“What truth?”

Logan’s breathing became uneven.

“The woman who raised me wasn’t my biological mother.”

Silence.

Robert looked confused.

“What are you saying?”

Logan’s voice shook.

“Dad… Elizabeth wasn’t my mother.”

Joanna felt the world tilt.

“What?”

Logan continued.

“I found old records. DNA reports.”

A pause.

Then the sentence that changed everything.

“Joanna… you and I aren’t strangers.”

Her heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

Logan swallowed.

“The necklace.”

Joanna touched the charm around her neck.

Logan whispered:

“It belonged to your grandmother.”

A pause.

“And mine.”

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible truth was becoming real.

Their families were connected.

Their pasts were connected.

Maybe even their bloodlines.

Then Logan said the words that made Robert go pale.

“I left because I found out the people who hid our past…”

Another pause.

“They were coming after our baby.”

Joanna looked at her newborn son.

Her child.

The child she promised to protect.

“Where are you now?”

Robert demanded.

Logan didn’t answer.

Instead, the call filled with static.

Then a sound.

A struggle.

A crash.

“Logan?”

No response.

The line went dead.

And on the other end of the hospital room…

The baby began crying.

May you like

As if he somehow knew.

Everything had just changed.
