Chapter 1 - The Call at Ash River Gate

“Should I answer?”

Theo held Mara’s phone between both hands.

The screen continued vibrating.

DAD.

Rain struck the roof of the car hard enough to blur every other sound.

Mara looked at her son.

Theo was only seven.

He should have been worrying about missing school, whether Lyra had stolen his blanket, and whether their father remembered the chocolate fountain.

He should not have been sitting inside a blocked royal vehicle wondering whether answering his father could change where he slept tonight.

Mara hated every adult who had helped put that expression on his face.

Including herself.

She opened the door again.

“Give it to me.”

Theo placed the phone in her hand.

Mara answered.

“Kale.”

For half a second, there was nothing.

Then she heard his breathing.

“Mara.”

His voice was lower than usual.

Controlled.

But the mate bond betrayed him.

Pain pulsed beneath her ribs.

“Tell Reeves to move the vehicles.”

“I already did.”

Mara looked toward the checkpoint.

Nothing changed.

“He’s still blocking us.”

“That order isn’t mine.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Kale’s voice hardened.

“Rowan.”

“Yes.”

“I’m handling him.”

“You should have handled him before signing the treaty.”

Another silence.

This one hurt.

“Mara, I didn’t understand Annex 9.”

“You didn’t read it.”

“I read the treaty.”

“No. You signed pages someone summarized for you because you were in a hurry to announce your engagement.”

“Mara—”

“To another woman.”

Theo looked toward the window.

Mara lowered her voice.

“I’m not having this conversation in front of the children.”

Kale exhaled.

“Then let me speak to them.”

“No.”

The word came immediately.

The bond between them snapped with his shock.

“Mara.”

“You don’t get to use them to make me turn around.”

“I would never—”

“You just ordered patrols after us.”

“I did that before I knew the stay was valid.”

“You are the king.”

Her voice shook despite her effort to control it.

“You don’t get to say you didn’t know what the law allowed after sending armed guards toward your children.”

Kale said nothing.

Mara heard something in the background.

Voices.

Elias.

A door slamming.

Then Kale spoke again.

“Reeves has been ordered to release you.”

Mara looked at the captain.

His communications crystal flashed.

He read the incoming order.

His shoulders relaxed.

“Captain?” Mara called.

Reeves stepped toward her.

“The royal order has been withdrawn.”

Mara nearly sagged with relief.

Then another crystal lit at the checkpoint.

Red.

Not royal blue.

Judicial red.

Reeves froze.

Mara’s stomach tightened.

“What is that?”

He turned toward the central projection.

A male face appeared.

Chancellor Rowan Vale.

Sixty-two.

Sharp silver beard.

The man who had advised three generations of Draven rulers.

And the man Mara had never trusted.

“My Luna,” Rowan said.

Mara’s hand tightened around her phone.

“You are obstructing a lawful protected transfer.”

“No.”

Rowan smiled faintly.

“I’m preventing royal heirs from being removed beyond crown jurisdiction during a succession emergency.”

“There is no succession emergency.”

“There will be.”

Kale heard him through the phone.

“Rowan.”

The chancellor’s expression changed slightly.

“Your Majesty.”

“Withdraw the order.”

“I cannot.”

Kale’s voice became lethal.

“That was not a request.”

Rowan did not flinch.

“The Continuity Treaty was ratified at 10:58 tonight.”

Mara’s skin went cold.

Kale said, “The public recognition was ceremonial.”

“Not under Northern law.”

Celestine.

Mara suddenly understood why the announcement had been rushed.

Why it happened tonight.

Why Annex 9 had been buried in the treaty.

Rowan continued.

“Lady Celestine is now recognized as incoming royal consort. Therefore, Annex 9 has entered provisional effect.”

Mara looked toward Theo and Lyra.

“Not while the guardianship stay is active.”

“Correct.”

Rowan’s expression remained calm.

“For seventy-two hours.”

Kale went silent.

Mara understood the threat.

After seventy-two hours, if nothing changed, Celestine would gain ceremonial authority over the twins.

Educational oversight.

Succession attendance.

Access.

Not custody.

But a door.

And once opened, Rowan would find another law.

Then another.

Mara looked at Captain Reeves.

“Do you have a neutral judicial counter-order?”

His expression changed.

“No.”

“Then move your vehicles.”

Rowan’s jaw tightened.

“My Luna—”

“Registrar Bell already warned the crown.”

Mara stepped closer to the roadblock.

“If you want to physically detain two seven-year-old children under a chancellor’s administrative order, do it.”

Reeves looked at her.

Mara continued.

“But you will do it while I’m standing here.”

Rain ran down her face.

“And every pack in the kingdom will learn exactly what Black Ridge did tonight.”

Reeves stared at her.

Then he turned.

“Move the vehicles.”

One guard hesitated.

“Captain?”

“That is an order.”

Engines started.

The first black SUV pulled away.

Then the second.

A narrow path opened toward the bridge.

Mara’s knees almost weakened.

Rowan’s face remained inside the projection.

“This is not finished.”

Mara looked directly at him.

“No.”

Her wolf rose beneath her skin.

“For once, Chancellor, I think it’s finally started.”

She returned to the car.

Theo looked at her.

“Are we going home?”

Mara swallowed.

“No.”

“Where are we going?”

She looked through the windshield.

Across the Ash River bridge waited Moonbridge territory.

Neutral ground.

And the only Alpha powerful enough to challenge Kale Draven without immediately starting a war.

“To your aunt.”

Lyra rubbed her eyes.

“Aunt Sera?”

“Yes.”

Theo frowned.

“Dad hates Aunt Sera.”

Mara almost smiled.

“At the moment, that may be useful.”

The car began crossing.

Halfway over the bridge, the mate bond pulled so hard Mara gasped.

Kale.

She felt his wolf.

Angry.

Terrified.

Calling to her.

She did not turn around.

At Black Ridge Palace, Kale stood before the command crystal watching his wife’s vehicle cross the border.

The second the car reached Moonbridge territory, the tracking sigil disappeared.

Gone.

His mate.

His children.

Gone from his sight.

Elias stood beside him.

Kale’s hands curled slowly into fists.

“Find Rowan.”

“He left the palace.”

“When?”

“Before you returned from the hotel.”

Kale turned.

“And Celestine?”

Elias hesitated.

“Still at the Grand Meridian.”

Kale’s expression became unreadable.

Then the doors opened.

A royal clerk rushed inside carrying a sealed document.

“Your Majesty.”

“What?”

The young man swallowed.

“Lady Celestine has filed a Continuity Petition.”

Kale stared at him.

“For what?”

The clerk extended the paper.

Elias read over Kale’s shoulder.

Then went pale.

The petition requested emergency recognition of instability within the current royal household.

Specifically—

The reigning Luna’s unauthorized removal of the heirs.

Kale read the final paragraph.

If accepted, the council could declare Mara temporarily unfit to exercise succession guardianship.

And once that happened—

Annex 9 would transfer authority over Theo and Lyra.

To Celestine.

Kale’s wolf exploded beneath his skin.

The windows shook.

Every guard in the room lowered their eyes.

Elias whispered, “Kale.”

Kale stared at Celestine’s signature.

The woman he had publicly named as his future consort less than three hours earlier had already begun legal proceedings against his wife.

Against his children’s mother.

He lifted his gaze.

“Seal the palace.”

Elias stopped.

“What?”

“No one enters.”

Kale’s eyes burned gold.

“No one leaves.”

“And Celestine?”

Kale crushed the petition in his hand.

“Bring my fiancée home.”

His voice dropped to something far more dangerous than a growl.

May you like

“I think it is time we discussed our wedding.”
