Chapter 5 - The Night the Crown Fell

Black Ridge Palace fell without a battle.

That frightened Kale more than war would have.

By sunset, Rowan controlled the council wing, the archives and the succession vault.

Half the royal guard remained loyal to Kale.

The other half claimed they were protecting “constitutional continuity.”

Which meant Rowan had planned this for years.

Kale stood inside Moonbridge’s war room looking at the tactical map.

Ronan Voss stood opposite him.

“You cannot cross with an army.”

“It is my territory.”

“And Rowan wants you to act like a king instead of a father.”

Kale looked at him.

Ronan pointed toward the map.

“The second you march on your own palace, he declares civil conflict.”

Elias nodded reluctantly.

“He can trigger emergency succession procedure.”

Mara entered.

“What happens then?”

Everyone looked at her.

Elias answered.

“If the reigning Alpha is considered unable to govern, authority passes temporarily to a regency council.”

“Controlled by Rowan.”

“Yes.”

“And Theo?”

Silence.

Mara’s stomach tightened.

“What about my son?”

Kale looked at her.

“As firstborn heir, Theo becomes the symbolic anchor of the regency.”

Mara went cold.

“He’s seven.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Her wolf surged.

“No one is using my child to legitimize a coup.”

Kale moved toward her.

“Mara—”

She stepped back instinctively.

He stopped immediately.

The movement hurt them both.

Kale lowered his hands.

“I won’t let them.”

“You already signed a treaty giving them access.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know.”

Her voice cracked.

“Knowing after the damage is done does not undo it.”

Kale absorbed the blow.

“You’re right.”

Mara hated how much easier anger would have been if he fought back.

Sera entered carrying a folder.

“I found something.”

She placed it on the table.

“What?”

“Adrian’s medical record.”

Kale froze.

“You said it was destroyed.”

“The royal copy was.”

Sera looked at him.

“But Adrian did not trust Rowan either.”

She opened the folder.

“He had a healer from Moonbridge examine him three days before the succession.”

Ronan read the report.

“Trace silverroot exposure.”

Kale stared.

Proof.

After eight years.

Proof his brother had been poisoned before the night he died.

Kale sat down.

His face emptied.

Mara watched grief move through him.

Not dramatic.

Not loud.

Worse.

His hands started shaking.

“I killed him.”

“No,” Sera said.

Kale looked up.

“He shifted. He attacked me. I—”

“You defended yourself.”

“I broke his neck.”

“You did not poison him.”

Kale looked toward the report.

“Rowan knew.”

“Yes.”

Kale closed his eyes.

For years, Rowan had stood beside him at memorial ceremonies.

Advised him.

Called Adrian unstable.

Encouraged Sera’s exile.

Then helped shape Kale into the ruler easiest to manipulate.

A king who trusted systems more than people.

A king who believed questioning advisors was weakness.

A king who could be convinced to sign a treaty rather than have an uncomfortable conversation with his wife.

Mara watched the realization destroy something inside him.

Then Theo entered.

Everyone turned.

He wore pajamas.

“What’s a regency?”

Mara’s heart stopped.

“Theo.”

“I heard Uncle Ronan talking.”

Ronan winced.

“My fault.”

Theo looked at Kale.

Their eyes met.

For the first time since Ash River, father and son were in the same room.

Kale did not move.

Theo did.

He ran across the room.

“Dad!”

Kale dropped to his knees.

Theo crashed into him.

Kale held him with both arms.

His face disappeared into his son’s hair.

Mara looked away because the emotion between them felt private.

Theo pulled back.

“Are you still marrying that lady?”

Silence.

Kale looked at his son.

“No.”

“Why did you say you were?”

The question was brutally simple.

Kale could have lied.

Could have said politics.

Could have blamed Rowan.

He didn’t.

“Because I made a bad decision.”

Theo frowned.

“Mom said decisions can hurt people even if you say sorry.”

Kale’s eyes flicked toward Mara.

“She’s right.”

Theo studied his father.

“Did you hurt Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Are you fixing it?”

Kale’s throat tightened.

“I’m trying.”

Theo thought about that.

Then leaned closer.

“Lyra is mad at you.”

Kale almost smiled.

“I assumed.”

“She says you owe her chocolate.”

“That seems fair.”

Theo hugged him again.

Mara’s wolf softened painfully.

Then every light in the war room turned red.

Ronan stood.

“What happened?”

A Moonbridge guard entered.

“We intercepted a message from Black Ridge.”

“From who?”

“Rowan Vale.”

A projection appeared.

Rowan stood in the Black Ridge throne chamber.

Behind him sat the crown.

He did not wear it.

Not yet.

“My king,” Rowan said.

Kale’s face became stone.

“You have abandoned the royal seat during a constitutional crisis.”

“I am standing twenty minutes from my children.”

“You surrendered custodial authority.”

“To protect them.”

“Or because you are no longer fit to govern.”

Mara moved beside Kale.

Rowan noticed her.

“My Luna.”

“Don’t call me that.”

His smile faded.

Rowan continued.

“At sunrise, the council will vote on temporary regency.”

Kale’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t have enough votes.”

“I do now.”

Several council names appeared.

Mara recognized them.

Rowan had the numbers.

Kale looked at Elias.

Elias nodded grimly.

Rowan continued.

“However, civil conflict can still be avoided.”

Kale laughed coldly.

“What do you want?”

“The original treaty restored.”

Mara went still.

“Lady Celestine recognized.”

“No.”

“Annex 9 reinstated.”

Kale’s wolf growled.

“No.”

“And Prince Theo returned to Black Ridge for succession supervision.”

Every wolf in the room reacted.

Kale moved toward the projection.

The table cracked beneath his hand.

“You will never speak my son’s name as leverage again.”

Rowan sighed.

“Then at sunrise, you may no longer be Alpha King.”

Kale stared at him.

Then something unexpected happened.

He smiled.

Rowan’s expression changed.

Kale looked at Mara.

Then Theo.

Then the evidence of Adrian’s poisoning.

And for the first time, losing the crown did not frighten him.

“Fine.”

The room froze.

Rowan blinked.

“What?”

Kale looked directly at the projection.

“If keeping my throne requires handing my children to you, then take the throne.”

Mara stopped breathing.

Rowan’s face hardened.

“You do not mean that.”

Kale removed the royal signet ring from his hand.

The ring every Draven king had worn for four hundred years.

He placed it on the table.

“I have spent my entire life believing this made me a man worth following.”

His eyes shifted toward Mara.

“It almost cost me everyone worth coming home to.”

He looked back at Rowan.

“So yes.”

Kale’s voice was calm.

Terrifyingly calm.

“Take the chair.”

A pause.

“But you will never touch my children.”

The transmission ended.

No one spoke.

Then Mara looked at the signet ring.

“You would really give it up?”

Kale met her eyes.

“Yes.”

“For us?”

He shook his head.

“For what I should have understood years ago.”

He looked at Theo.

“A crown is supposed to protect the pack.”

Then at Mara.

“If mine requires sacrificing my family, it deserves to fall.”

Mara’s heart broke in a completely different way.

And somewhere inside Black Ridge Palace, Rowan Vale realized the Alpha King had just done the one thing his entire plan had never anticipated.

May you like

He had stopped being afraid of losing power.
