Chapter 2 - The Foundation of Lies

By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, Rachel was sitting in the glass-walled conference room of Sterling & Hughes, the most ruthless corporate law firm in Manhattan. She wore a sharp white power suit, her pregnancy barely visible, projecting an aura of absolute dominance.
Across from her sat three elite attorneys, sifting through the digital files Rachel had downloaded from Zachary's home office safe at 2:00 a.m.
Zachary thought he was the sole genius behind Patterson Technologies. He loved playing the self-made billionaire for Forbes magazine. But Zachary had conveniently forgotten that it was Rachel—a former MIT data architect—who had written the core algorithm that made his software functional seven years ago.
"The prenup is ironclad regarding his pre-marital assets," the lead attorney, a silver-haired shark named Marcus, explained. "But the post-marital acquisitions are highly vulnerable. Especially if we can prove he used marital funds to finance this affair."
Rachel slid a USB drive across the mahogany table. "He didn't just use marital funds, Marcus. He used corporate funds."
The attorneys stopped breathing.
"What do you mean?" Marcus asked, plugging the drive into his laptop.
"Zachary is arrogant," Rachel said, sipping a cup of herbal tea. "He didn't want the board of directors to see a sudden drop in his personal liquidity, so he didn't buy Alice Carter a condo out of his own pocket. He created a dummy LLC—Apex Consulting—and billed Patterson Technologies for two hundred thousand dollars a month in 'strategic advisory fees'."
Marcus opened the files. His eyes widened. "Good God. He routed corporate capital to a shell company to pay for the mistress's lifestyle. That isn't just infidelity, Rachel. That's corporate embezzlement. It's wire fraud."
"I know," Rachel smiled, a cold, predatory curve of her lips. "He bought Alice a four-million-dollar loft in Tribeca using money stolen from his own investors. And his IPO is scheduled for next month."
"If this leaks, the SEC will shut down the IPO, and the board will oust him immediately," Marcus said, awe creeping into his voice. "We can destroy him."
"We aren't going to destroy the company," Rachel corrected him. "I own twenty percent of the founder's shares. My child's future is tied to that stock. We are going to excise the tumor."
At that exact moment, Zachary was pacing the floor of his luxury hotel suite, running his hands frantically through his hair. His phone was ringing off the hook. His black AMEX had been declined when he tried to order breakfast. Rachel had frozen all the joint accounts.
Alice was sitting on the edge of the hotel bed, filing her nails. "Zach, relax. She's just having a pregnant hormonal meltdown. You're a billionaire. Throw a few million at her in a settlement, and she'll go quietly."
Zachary spun around, his face pale with terror. "You don't understand Rachel. She doesn't throw tantrums. She executes. If she locks me out of the company servers, I'm dead."

His phone buzzed. It was a text from his Chief Financial Officer. Zachary. We have a problem. The SEC just subpoenaed the Apex Consulting ledgers. What the hell is Apex?
Zachary dropped his phone. It hit the carpet with a dull thud. Rachel wasn't just divorcing him. She was hunting him.
