Chapter 5 - The Nursery in Ivory

Two years later.

The spring sunshine poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the CEO’s office at Patterson-Sterling Tech. Rachel stood by the glass, looking out over the magnificent Manhattan skyline. She wore a perfectly tailored navy suit, projecting power, grace, and absolute peace.

The company had successfully gone public eighteen months ago, shattering Wall Street records. Rachel had rebranded the firm, completely wiping Zachary’s toxic legacy from the corporate history books.

The heavy glass door to her office opened, and her executive assistant smiled. "Ms. Patterson? Your three o'clock is here."

"Send them in," Rachel beamed.

A handsome, tall man with kind brown eyes walked into the office. It was Julian, the brilliant lead legal counsel who had helped her navigate the IPO. But he wasn't carrying legal briefs today. He was carrying a beautiful, laughing one-year-old baby girl.

"Mama!" the little girl squealed, reaching her chubby arms out.

Rachel’s heart melted completely. She crossed the room and scooped her daughter, Lily, into her arms, pressing a flurry of kisses to the toddler's cheeks. Julian wrapped a warm, supportive arm around Rachel's waist, kissing her softly on the temple.

"How did the board meeting go?" Julian asked, smiling down at them.

"Flawless," Rachel said, leaning into his embrace. "Profits are up thirty percent. The new algorithm is patent-pending. And I have a dinner reservation for the three of us at eight."

"Le Charm Eternel?" Julian teased gently.

Rachel laughed, shaking her head. "No. I bought that restaurant last month and fired the maître d'. We are going somewhere new."

Zachary Patterson was a distant, fading memory. He had taken a plea deal for five years in a minimum-security prison to avoid a longer sentence, completely stripped of his wealth, his reputation, and his access to Rachel and Lily. Alice Carter was serving her own time, the Tribeca condo auctioned off long ago.

Rachel carried Lily over to the velvet sofa in the corner of her office. She had painted the accent wall of the nursery in her new penthouse a beautiful, warm ivory. Not blue. She had made every single decision on her own terms, building an empire that no man could ever steal from her.

She looked at Julian, the man who respected her brilliance and cherished her daughter, and realized that the worst night of her life had actually been a gift.

Zachary had tried to hide his betrayal behind a velvet curtain. But Rachel had pulled it back, burned his kingdom to the ground, and built a breathtaking, unbreakable world in its ashes.
