Chapter 4 - The Convergence of Blood and Fire

The air in the nursery seemed to thicken, charged with an explosive, lethal tension.
Matteo’s finger rested lightly on the trigger. He had executed traitors before; it was the ugly, necessary tax of ruling the underworld. But this betrayal cut deeper than any other. It had touched his home, his legacy, and most terrifyingly of all, the innocent child currently resting in the dark closet behind him.
“You think you’re the only one with a gun in this room, Viktor?” Matteo asked, his voice steady as stone.
Before Viktor could react, the double doors of the nursery burst wide open.
Four heavily armed estate guards—the ones Matteo trusted most, men who had been vetted through three separate layers of counter-intelligence—poured into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked directly onto Viktor’s chest.
Viktor’s smug expression finally shattered. He looked from Matteo to the guards, realizing too late that his encrypted radio transmission had been intercepted on the master house network before he even crossed the threshold.
“You fool,” Viktor snarled, lunging desperately for his concealed weapon.
Bang.
The silenced shot was muffled, but the impact was absolute. Matteo’s bullet caught Viktor cleanly in the right shoulder, spinning him around and sending his pistol clattering across the polished wooden floor.
Before Viktor could hit the ground, two guards slammed into him, driving him face-first into the hardwood and snapping heavy tactical zip-ties around his wrists with brutal efficiency.
“Secure him,” Matteo ordered, his voice brooking no argument. “Take him to the lower basement vault. Do not let him speak to anyone. If he breathes a word, end it.”
“Boss,” the lead guard acknowledged sharply, hauling Viktor up by his collar and dragging him out of the room as the traitor cursed and spat blood across the pristine hallway floor.
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, the nursery fell quiet once more.
Matteo stood alone in the center of the room. The adrenaline rush began to ebb, leaving behind a crushing, suffocating wave of reality. He lowered his weapon, safety engaged, and slowly let out a long, shuddering breath.
He turned his head toward the walk-in closet.
The louvered door slowly creaked open.
Liana stepped out into the light. She looked pale, her eyes wide and luminous with unshed tears, but she stood tall, shielding the infant against her chest with fierce, protective devotion.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
Matteo walked slowly toward them, stopping just two feet away. He looked down at the baby—the child he had raised as his heir for nine months, the child who carried none of his blood, yet whom he had already sworn to protect with his dying breath.
Then he looked up at Liana.
“He has your eyes,” Matteo whispered, his voice cracking slightly—the first time in years that the formidable mafia boss had shown vulnerability.
Liana swallowed hard, her voice barely a murmur. “And he has your spirit. He wouldn't stop crying until someone made the world safe for him again.”
Matteo reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand hovering near the baby’s cheek. He didn't touch him yet, giving Liana the choice to allow it.
Liana didn't pull away. She stepped just a fraction closer, letting Matteo’s knuckle brush softly against the infant’s warm skin.
“What do we do now?” Liana asked, her voice trembling with the terrifying uncertainty of their new reality. “The board... Viktor’s men... your enemies. They know something is broken in this house.”
Matteo’s dark eyes hardened, the fierce, protective authority returning tenfold—not just as a crime lord, but as a man who had finally found something worth fighting for.
“They know nothing,” Matteo said firmly. “To the world, Viktor tried to execute a coup and was dealt with. To the board, the Varric bloodline remains unbroken, secured by an ironclad trust.”
He looked down at Liana, his gaze softening into something entirely unfamiliar to him—something tender, resolute, and permanent.
“And as for us... tomorrow morning, the estate will hire a new head governess. A woman of unmatched courage, whose salary will reflect her invaluable worth, and who will never, ever leave this house.”
Liana stared at him, the tension in her shoulders slowly dissolving as a fragile, breathtaking smile broke through her tears.
May you like
“A governess,” she whispered.
“Only to start,” Matteo replied, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. “By dawn, the world will see a new Varric rise. And no one will ever touch what is ours again.”
