Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Estate

The first rays of golden sunlight pierced the heavy velvet drapes of the master suite, washing over the polished marble floors and turning the crystal chandeliers into cascading fields of light.
Outside, the manicured lawns of the Varric estate stretched out toward the horizon, quiet and peaceful beneath the morning mist.
Inside the nursery, the room was bathed in a warm, serene glow.
Liana sat in the comfortable velvet rocking chair by the window, wearing a soft cream-colored sweater instead of her red maid uniform. In her arms, nine-month-old Nico slept peacefully, his breathing deep and steady, completely at ease in a world that had finally stopped spinning out of control.
The door opened softly.
Matteo walked in, carrying a tray with two cups of hot coffee and a small plate of pastries. He had shaved, changed into a crisp dark shirt, and though the dark circles under his eyes remained, the haunted, desperate look of the night before was gone. Replaced by something far more dangerous: absolute, unbreakable resolve.
He set the tray down on the bedside table and walked over to the rocking chair.
“How is he?” Matteo asked quietly, kneeling beside her so he was at eye level with both mother and child.
“He slept through the entire night,” Liana smiled softly, looking down at the baby. “For the first time since we got here.”
Matteo reached out, gently resting his hand over Liana’s fingers where they cradled the baby’s back. Her hand was warm, steady, and grounded.
“And you?” Matteo asked, his voice softening. “Did you sleep?”
“A little,” she admitted, looking up to meet his dark, piercing gaze. “It’s hard to sleep when everything you thought you lost is suddenly sitting right in front of you.”
Matteo squeezed her hand gently. “You didn't lose him, Liana. And neither did I. From this moment on, no one crosses this threshold. No one threatens this family. The past is buried with Viktor and his conspirators.”
He stood up slowly, walking over to the tall arched window that overlooked the sprawling courtyard below. Two black sedans sat parked by the gates, and a fresh detail of loyal guards stood at attention—a wall of iron protection built to shield the fragile peace they had just reclaimed.
Liana shifted the baby slightly, looking up at Matteo’s broad silhouette against the rising sun.
“What happens next, Matteo?” she asked, the use of his first name feeling natural, heavy with a shared destiny.
Matteo turned around, his expression firm, resolute, and entirely certain. He walked back to the rocking chair, extended his hand toward her, and offered a steady, unwavering grip.
“Next,” Matteo said, a faint, confident smile touching his lips as the morning light caught the gold signet ring on his finger, “we build a fortress that not even time can tear down. Together.”
Liana looked at his outstretched hand, then down at their sleeping son, and finally up into the eyes of the man who had traded an empire of fear for a kingdom of truth.

She placed her hand in his.
And as the sun rose fully over the Varric estate, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and rose, the dark night was finally over.
