Chapter 3 - The Boy in the Photograph

Victoria was removed from the Carter home before sunrise.

She was not arrested immediately. Her attorney arrived quickly, dressed in an expensive suit and carrying a confidence that Daniel had once admired.

But the police issued an emergency protective order.

Victoria could not come near Lily.

Could not enter the home.

Could not contact Daniel directly.

As she stood by the front gate waiting for her lawyer’s car, she looked back at Daniel.

“You think you saved her,” she said quietly.

Daniel held Lily in his arms.

“I did.”

Victoria’s expression turned strange.

“You have no idea who your daughter is.”

Then she got into the car and left.

That sentence stayed with Daniel all morning.

Lily was examined at a pediatric clinic. The doctor confirmed minor burns and signs of repeated stress. There were faint bruises on her upper arms, old enough that Daniel could not explain them away.

He hated himself for missing them.

Later, while Lily drew rabbits and stars in the waiting room, Daniel called the number listed beneath the photograph.

A man answered after two rings.

“You found it,” he said.

“Who is this?”

“My name is Ethan.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Ethan Hale?”

There was a long silence.

“Yes.”

“I need to talk to you.”

Ethan gave him an address in Venice Beach.

The place was a small repair shop wedged between a tattoo studio and a coffee stand. Ethan was twenty-two now. He had grease on his hands and a scar near his left eyebrow.

He looked nothing like the frightened child described in the old police report.

But his eyes held the same exhaustion Daniel had seen in Lily.

“You married her,” Ethan said.

Daniel nodded.

“I didn’t know.”

“No one does,” Ethan replied. “That’s how she survives.”

Ethan explained that Victoria had been married to Michael Hale when he was young. Michael had struggled with gambling and alcohol, but Ethan insisted he had never been violent.

“One night, Mom said Dad was taking me away,” Ethan said. “She locked me in my room. I heard them fighting. Then I heard glass break. Then nothing.”

Michael was found dead the next morning.

Victoria told police it was an overdose.

“She told me I imagined the fight,” Ethan continued. “Then she sent me away to a boarding school. When I tried to talk about Dad, she said I would end up abandoned too.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?” Daniel asked.

“I was a kid. And later, I had no proof.”

Ethan slid a small flash drive across the table.

“I found this in an old box of my father’s things.”

Daniel plugged it into his laptop.

There was one audio file.

A recording from the night Michael died.

At first, there was static.

Then Michael’s voice.

“You can’t keep doing this to him, Victoria.”

Victoria’s voice answered, sharp and cold.

“He is my son. I will raise him however I want.”

Then Michael said something that made Daniel’s blood freeze.

“If anything happens to me, they’ll know about the insurance policy.”

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“She killed him?”

“I don’t know,” Ethan said. “But I know she destroyed everyone who got too close.”

Daniel thought of Lily.

May you like

And he knew Victoria would not stop simply because she had been caught.
