Chapter 8 - The Trial of Victoria Hale
Victoria Hale’s trial began four months later.
The charges were extensive.
Child abuse.
Kidnapping.
Arson.
Witness intimidation.
Financial fraud.
Conspiracy connected to Ava Carter’s death.
The courtroom was filled every day.
Reporters waited outside. People who had once admired Victoria now wanted every detail of her downfall.
But Daniel refused to let Lily become a spectacle.
She did not testify in court.
Her recorded interviews, taken gently by trained child advocates, were enough.
Ethan testified.
His voice shook when he described being locked in the nursery as a child. But he did not stop.
“She taught me to believe that fear was normal,” he told the jury. “I’m here because it wasn’t.”
Daniel testified too.
He told the truth about his own failure.
“I was absent,” he said. “I trusted appearances. I believed my work was protecting my family, but I was not there when my daughter needed me.”
Victoria watched him from the defense table.
For a moment, Daniel saw the woman he had married.
Then he saw the woman Lily had feared.
The jury found Victoria guilty on every major charge.
When the judge asked whether she had anything to say, Victoria stood slowly.
She looked at Ethan first.
Then Lily, who watched the hearing from a private room through a secure video link.
“I wanted control,” Victoria said. “I thought control was the same as safety.”
Ethan did not respond.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“I was wrong.”
It was not enough.
It could never be enough.
But it was the first honest sentence she had spoken in years.
The judge sentenced her to prison.
As officers led her away, Victoria looked back one final time.
Lily was not watching her.
Lily was coloring a picture of the ocean beside Daniel.
And that was the real ending of Victoria’s power.
