Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Sunset

By 7:00 AM, the morning light filtered through the high windows of the kitchen corridor. The scent of fresh wood varnish mixed with the aroma of brewing coffee.

I stood at the end of the hall as the lower staff began to arrive for their morning duties.

Anna walked down the hall holding Lily’s hand. Lily was shuffling her feet, her small eyes half-asleep, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

As they reached the staff doorway, Anna automatically stopped, reaching down to help Lily lift her leg over the high stone step.

She froze.

The raised marble threshold was gone. In its place was a beautiful, smooth oak ramp, flush with the floor, fitted with subtle brass edges that matched the grand woodwork of the estate.

Lily stopped too. She looked at the smooth wood, then looked up at her mother.

"Mama?" Lily whispered. "Where did the bump go?"

Anna stared at the floor, her lips parting in disbelief. She took a step forward, then let go of Lily's hand.

Lily took a tentative step. Her leg brace glided effortlessly over the smooth wood. No tripping. No metallic scraping sound. No pain.

She took another step, then turned around and grinned, her small face lighting up like the morning sun. "Look, Mama! I didn't fall!"

Anna covered her mouth with both hands, tears welling up instantly in her eyes.

"It's a good ramp, isn't it?" I said, stepping out from the shadow of the doorway.

Anna turned quickly, wiping her cheeks. "Mr. Moretti... you... you did this?"

"I told you it would be fixed," I said, walking over to them. I crouched down so I was at eye level with Lily. "Does it hurt your leg now, Lily?"

Lily shook her head vigorously, a bright smile on her face. "No! It's smooth like ice!"

"Good," I said softly. "No one apologizes to the floor in my house ever again."

Lily reached into her small pocket and pulled out a crinkled sticker of a gold star. She extended her small hand, offering it to me. "For you. For fixing the bump."

I looked at the cheap plastic sticker, then at her earnest little face. For a man who owned millions in assets and held the power of life and death across half the city, receiving that little gold star felt surprisingly heavy.

I took it carefully and pressed it onto the lapel of my custom tailored suit. "Thank you, Lily. I'll keep it safe."

Anna watched us, her expression shifting from gratitude to deep, sudden anxiety. She knew as well as I did that acts of kindness from a man like me did not come without questions.

"Anna," I said, standing up. "Leave Lily with Norah for a moment. I need to speak with you in private."

The color drained from Anna's face again, but she nodded. She whispered a few words to Norah, who took Lily toward the dining area, and then followed me back up to the private parlor.

Once the double doors were shut, I turned to face her.

"How long were you married to Julian Valenti?" I asked directly.

Anna gasped, taking a sharp step backward until her back hit the polished door frame. Panic flared in her dark eyes like a trapped animal.

"Please," she begged, her voice cracking. "Please don't send us back to them. I'll leave! I'll take Lily and leave the city today! Just don't let Dominic take her!"

"Sit down, Anna," I said, my tone firm but calm. "Nobody is sending you anywhere."

She stood frozen, trembling violently.

"I know who you are," I continued. "And I know Evelyn was blackmailing you. She kept you living in fear while taking money from both my accounts and Dominic's pocket."

Anna sank into a velvet armchair, hiding her face in her hands as silent sobs wracked her body. "Julian... Julian tried to get out," she sobbed. "When he found out I was pregnant, he wanted to leave the syndicate. Dominic found out. The car crash... it wasn't an accident, Mr. Moretti. Dominic killed his own brother to keep control of the family estate."

I crossed my arms, listening quietly.

"I ran," she gasped, looking up at me with tear-streaked cheeks. "I changed my name. I took Lily and ran. I thought if I worked in the house of his greatest enemy, Dominic would never think to look for me here. But Evelyn... she found my old ID six months ago. She told me if I didn't do whatever she said, she would call Dominic to come get my baby."

"Evelyn is done," I said coldly. "She is currently locked in her room, awaiting her fate. But Dominic is still a problem."

Anna looked at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "What are you going to do?"

"Dominic Valenti thinks he can play games in my house," I said, leaning over her chair, looking directly into her eyes. "He thinks he can use my territory to hunt a mother and her child. He is about to learn that no one touches what is under my protection."
