Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Three weeks later.
The morning sun beamed warmly down on the grounds of the Moretti estate. The chill of late autumn was giving way to a crisp, clear day.
The estate had changed noticeably.
Evelyn Crane had been turned over to the authorities for grand larceny and wire fraud, her career in luxury household management permanently ruined. Norah had been promoted to Head of Household Operations, bringing a fresh, compassionate atmosphere to the entire staff.
The missing $8,400 had been fully recovered from Evelyn's seized assets. But instead of returning it to my personal bank account, I used it to establish a dedicated medical and education fund for Lily.
I stood on the wide back terrace, watching Lily run across the manicured green lawn.
She wasn't wearing her heavy orthopedic brace today. Her doctor had recommended a new, lightweight carbon-fiber sleeve—funded through her new trust—that allowed her leg to move much more naturally. She was chasing a small golden retriever puppy I had bought for her second birthday present.
Her laughter rang clear and bright across the garden.
"She hasn't stopped running all morning," a voice said behind me.
I turned to see Anna walking out onto the terrace. She wore a soft cream-colored sweater and dark trousers, her dark hair flowing loosely around her shoulders. The lines of strain and fear that had carved her face for years were completely gone, replaced by a radiant, peaceful beauty.
"She's strong," I said, stepping closer to her. "She gets that from her mother."
Anna blushed softly, looking out at her daughter. "I never thanked you properly, Matteo. Not just for keeping us safe from Dominic... but for giving us a home where we don't have to hide."
"You don't ever have to thank me, Anna," I said softly, reaching out to gently take her hand. Her fingers were warm, fitting perfectly into mine. "This house was just stone and cold marble before you and Lily came along. You gave it life."
Anna looked up at me, her dark eyes shining with emotion. "I used to be so afraid of you. When I first started working here, everyone said Mr. Moretti was a dangerous man."
"I am a dangerous man," I admitted honestly. "To the people who try to harm what I care about."
"And what do you care about now?" she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper, stepping a fraction of an inch closer to me.
I looked down at her face, tracing the soft line of her jaw with my thumb.
"I care about a resilient woman who fought through hell for her child," I said softly. "And a little girl who gave me a gold star for fixing a doorway."
Anna smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek, but this time it was a tear of joy. She leaned up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips gently against mine.
The kiss was soft at first, filled with months of unspoken longing, tension dissolving into warmth, before deepening into a promise of something permanent and real.
When we pulled back, Lily was standing at the edge of the terrace, holding the puppy in her small arms, looking up at us with wide, curious eyes.
"Are you two holding hands?" Lily asked loudly.
Anna laughed, wiping her eye, while I smiled down at the little girl.
"Yes, we are, Lily," I called back.

"Does that mean Mr. Moretti is staying for lunch?" she asked innocently.
"Mr. Moretti is staying for a lot longer than lunch," Anna replied, looking up at me with love sparkling in her eyes.
