Chapter 28 - A Walk in the Park

|

The autumn air was crisp and cool, scattering bright orange leaves across the paved pathways of the city park.

Arthur and Elena walked side by side, holding cups of hot apple cider.

It had become a rare but pleasant tradition for them to take a walk on Sunday mornings, catching up on the kids' lives without the pressure of a formal meeting.

“Ethan told me he’s thinking about proposing to Sarah,” Elena said, a wide smile on her face.

Arthur chuckled.

“He’s been thinking about it for six months. He’s redesigned the engagement ring four times. The boy is a perfectionist.”

“He wants it to be permanent,” Elena noted softly. “After everything he’s been through, he values stability more than anything.”

They walked in silence for a few minutes, listening to the crunch of leaves beneath their shoes.

“Arthur,” Elena said, her tone shifting to something more serious.

“Yes?”

“I want to thank you.”

Arthur looked at her, slightly confused.

“For what?”

“For not poisoning them against me,” Elena said, her voice thick with emotion. “When the truth came out about your father, and my mother’s involvement... you had every right to banish me completely. You could have told them I was a monster.”

Arthur stopped walking and turned to face her.

“You weren't a monster, Elena. You were a terrified teenager trying to survive in Charles Whitmore’s world. Just like I was.”

“But I lied to you.”

“And you paid for those lies,” Arthur said gently. “But you also loved Maya and Ethan. You protected them when Victoria wouldn't. I could never erase that, and I would never force them to hate you.”

Elena wiped a stray tear from her cheek, letting out a long, heavy sigh of absolute relief.

“I finally feel like I can forgive myself,” she whispered.

“You should,” Arthur agreed, offering a kind, platonic smile. “We all survived the cage, Elena. It’s time we all learned how to actually fly.”

They continued their walk through the park, the heavy chains of their shared traumatic past finally, completely broken.
