Chapter 32 - The Architect's Award

|

The banquet hall was filled with the elite of the city's architectural and real estate communities.

Ethan sat nervously at the round table, pulling at the collar of his tuxedo.

Arthur sat beside him, looking completely relaxed and incredibly proud.

“They’re going to give it to the Harrison firm,” Ethan muttered, shaking his head. “They designed that massive corporate plaza downtown. The foundation building is too small to win.”

“The foundation building has purpose,” Arthur corrected smoothly. “The plaza is just concrete and vanity.”

The presenter walked up to the podium, tapping the microphone.

“And now, for the Urban Renewal Design of the Year,” the presenter announced.

Ethan held his breath.

“This year’s winner managed to combine structural brilliance with a profound sense of community healing. The award goes to Ethan Whitmore-Bennett, for the Thomas Bennett Foundation Headquarters!”

Ethan completely froze.

Arthur aggressively clapped him on the back, laughing.

“Go get your award, son.”

Ethan stood up, his legs slightly shaky, and walked up to the stage amidst thunderous applause.

He took the heavy glass trophy, looking out at the crowd.

He saw Sebastian sitting at a table in the back, clapping politely. He saw Elena wiping a tear from her eye.

And he saw Arthur, looking at him with absolute, unconditional love.

Ethan leaned into the microphone.

“Thank you,” Ethan said, his voice echoing in the large room. “When I designed this building, I wanted to create a place that felt permanent. Because for a long time, I didn't know what permanence felt like.”

He looked directly at Arthur.

“A building is only as strong as its foundation. And I was lucky enough to be raised by a man who taught me that a true foundation isn't made of steel or concrete. It’s made of integrity, loyalty, and the courage to stay when things get hard.”

Ethan raised the glass trophy slightly.

“This award belongs to my father, Arthur Bennett. Thank you for giving me the solid ground to build on.”

Arthur stood up, clapping fiercely, completely unashamed of the tears streaming down his face.
