Chapter 9 - TWO YEARS LATER

I did not ask Sophie on a date until two years after she stopped working for my family.

By then, she was an LPN at a rehabilitation hospital.

Independent salary.

Own apartment.

Ethan preparing for college.

Margaret had a different care team.

No employment relationship.

No household hierarchy.

Even then, I asked once.

“Dinner?”

Sophie looked at me for a long time.

“As friends?”

“If that’s what you want.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then I’ll survive.”

She smiled.

“Dinner.”

We went to a small Mexican restaurant.

Nothing expensive.

No private room.

No chauffeur.

She ordered tacos.

I spilled salsa on my shirt.

She laughed so hard she cried.

Good beginning.

We dated slowly.

Painfully slowly according to Margaret.

Perfectly slowly according to Sophie.

May you like

Her pace mattered more.
