Chapter 10 - Where Home Begins

One year later.
The golden light of a late summer evening settled gently over the Moretti estate.
Inside the grand dining room, beneath the sparkling crystal chandelier, the massive mahogany table built for twenty people was set with four simple porcelain plates placed closely together at one end.
There were no guards standing silently in the shadows. The cold, heavy atmosphere that had once dominated the mansion was gone, replaced by the warm aroma of home-cooked pasta and garlic bread.
Dominic sat at the head of the table, wearing a comfortable dark sweater, carefully slicing a freshly baked pizza.
I sat to his right, wearing a soft cream dress, pouring fresh fruit juice into crystal tumblers.
Beside me sat eight-year-old Lily, her hair neatly braided, busily showing Dominic a colorful drawing she had made in art class. It showed three people holding hands under a big chandelier, with a stuffed rabbit floating beside them.
"Look, Uncle Dominic!" Lily pointed at the drawing excitedly. "That's you, that's Mommy, and that's me!"
Dominic took the paper carefully, studying it with a genuine, warm smile before placing it neatly beside his plate. "This is going right onto my office desk tomorrow morning, Lily."
Lily beamed with pride, reaching into the bread basket to pick up a warm garlic roll. She paused, looking across the long, polished table toward the far empty end, then looked back at Dominic.
"Uncle Dominic?" she asked softly.
"Yes, sweetie?" Dominic responded, looking down at her gently.
"Are you happy my mommy worked for your company?"
Dominic looked at me, his dark eyes filled with endless warmth, love, and quiet gratitude. He reached across the table, taking my hand and lacing his fingers through mine.
"Lily," Dominic answered, his deep voice filled with absolute sincerity. "Having your mother in my life is the greatest gift my father ever gave me."

Lily smiled happily, taking a big bite of her garlic roll.
I leaned back in my chair, holding my brother's hand tight, listening to my daughter's joyful laughter echo beneath the glowing chandelier. The dark shadows of lies, fear, and sapping poverty were gone forever, replaced by an unbreakable foundation of love, truth, and family.
