Chapter 14: The Freezing Night

Claire took a deliberate step backward, easily removing her ankles from the trembling, manicured hands trying to touch the hem of her skirt. She looked down at the mother-in-law who used to look down on her with such intense venom, the woman who had treated her like an unwanted charity case that Daniel had blessed by marrying.
"When you told me to 'Get out of my house,' did you care about the cold, Vivian?" Claire's voice was as sharp and icy as the winter wind howling outside the glass balcony. "There are plenty of cheap, low-end motels down the street that match your actual financial budget. Go use the prestigious 'Vance reputation' to check into one of them." Building security guards, alerted by the attorney, arrived at the door, stepping inside to firmly pull Vivian up from the floor, ignoring her dramatic wails and protests.

Ten minutes later, absolute, blissful silence returned to the massive penthouse. Daniel had been loaded into the back of a cold police transport van, locked away to be held for formal arraignment on second-degree domestic battery charges without bail until morning. Vivian was escorted out the grand front gates of the elite residential building by two burly security guards, holding nothing but her small leather handbag in the biting, freezing early winter wind. The neighborhood she had bragged about belonging to watched from their windows as the elite facade fell away, revealing the penniless parasite underneath.
Shivering violently in her thin silk gown, she looked up at the glowing lights of the penthouse balcony, realizing with a final, crushing weight that the counterfeit kingdom she and her son had built on a foundation of lies, greed, and cruelty had completely collapsed into nothingness, leaving them out in the cold where they belonged.
