Chapter 24 - The Ghost of ZurichThe morning mist still clung to the pine canopy of the Eliana Vance Coastal Reserve as the first hikers began to trace the winding trails overlooking the Pacific. Inside the warm, wood-paneled office of the community library, however, the atmosphere was far from tranquil.

Amy sat at her desk, staring down at an encrypted flash drive that had been hand-delivered by a federal courier less than an hour earlier. It bore no return address, save for a wax seal stamped with an unfamiliar family crest—a double-headed falcon clutching a broken ledger.
Liam walked in from the café carrying two steaming mugs of coffee, stopping abruptly when he saw the tension etched across Amy’s face. He set the mugs down and leaned over the desk.
"What is that?" Liam asked quietly, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the cold metal drive.
"The courier said it came from a secure locker in Zurich," Amy murmured, her voice tight. "A contingency file registered under Arthur Sterling’s personal Swiss portfolio. But Arthur is locked down in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. He shouldn't have access to external digital vaults."
Before Liam could reply, the secure terminal on the desk beeped, flashing an incoming encrypted data stream. Without hesitating, Amy plugged the flash drive into the isolated port.
A single digital folder appeared on the screen, labeled: The Sovereign Ledger.
Liam pulled up a chair beside her, his builder's hands resting flat on the wooden desk as the files began to decrypt automatically. The screen flooded with high-resolution financial documents, property titles, and digitized voice memos dating back over a decade. But it was the final document that made both of them freeze.
It wasn't just another corporate shell company or a real estate maneuver. It was a comprehensive dossier detailing a multi-million-dollar offshore asset recovery fund specifically designated to target Whitmore Global’s international charitable subsidiaries—and it was signed by a name neither of them expected to see ever again.
Julian Vance.
"Julian Vance?" Liam whispered in disbelief. "Evelyn’s brother. The former chief risk officer of Zurich International Banking."
"He wasn't just a risk officer," Amy said, her eyes racing across the financial trails displayed on the screen. "He was the architect behind every hidden subsidiary Arthur Sterling ever operated. When Arthur and Evelyn were arrested, Julian went underground. He didn't just inherit the contingency file—he activated it."
A digital warning prompt flashed red across the monitor: Incoming satellite data synchronization detected from Geneva, Switzerland. Asset target: Whitmore Global International Holdings.
Amy grabbed her phone, dialing Claire’s direct line with trembling fingers. The call picked up on the second ring, the background noise on the other end filled with the hum of the corporate jet engines.
"Claire," Amy said urgently, the moment the connection established. "You need to check your global terminal immediately. Julian Vance is moving on your European subsidiaries."
"I know," Claire’s voice came through the speaker, calm, cold, and deadlier than steel. "The London and Zurich boardrooms just locked down their primary accounts. Julian thinks he can hide behind offshore nominee trusts, but he just made a fatal mistake."

"What mistake?" Liam asked, leaning closer to the speaker.
"He tried to route the funds through a regulated New York clearinghouse," Claire replied, a dangerous edge sharpening her tone. "Which means federal prosecutors now have jurisdiction to seize every single penny he owns. Game on."
