Chapter 27 - Shadows on the PacificBack in Cannon Beach, the evening tide rolled in against the rocky shoreline, washing away the footprints on the sand as the sun dipped below the horizon in a blaze of violet and gold.

Amy sat on the wooden bench outside the community library, watching Eliana chase a golden retriever across the manicured lawn of Foundation Square. Liam stood beside her, his arm resting protectively around her shoulders as they breathed in the crisp, salt-scented air.
"Claire just called from Zurich," Liam said softly, smiling down at her. "Julian Vance was arrested at his bank headquarters an hour ago. The international assets are fully frozen, and the Sterling network is completely dismantled."
Amy let out a long, shuddering breath, resting her head against Liam’s chest. "It’s really over, isn't it? No more lawyers, no more shell corporations, no more ghosts from the past."
"It’s over," Liam confirmed, kissing the top of her head. "We won."
Down on the pathway near the reserve entrance, a solitary black sedan parked quietly beneath the shadows of the coastal pines. The engine idled softly, its headlights off.
Inside the vehicle, a man in a dark trench coat lowered a pair of binoculars, his gaze fixed entirely on the library balcony where Amy and Liam stood together. He didn't speak. He simply reached into his jacket, pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a ten-digit number that had no connection to the Sterling estate, the Whitmore empire, or the courts of New York.
"Target sighted," the man muttered into the receiver, his voice cold and raspy. "The sanctuary is established. Waiting for final authorization to proceed."
A synthesized, distorted voice crackled through the secure earpiece from thousands of miles away:

“Let them enjoy their little paradise for a few more days. When the winter storm hits the coast, we strike where they least expect it. Burn the library to the ground.”
The man in the car lowered the phone, a slow, malicious grin spreading across his face as he shifted the sedan into gear and drove silently away into the Oregon night.
