Chapter 3 - THE PHONE LAUREN KEPT IN A DRAWER

The hidden documents led to the phone.

Mom owned one.

I bought it for her.

I wondered why she stopped texting me directly three months earlier.

Lauren said:

“She gets overwhelmed by apps.”

Apparently, Mom’s phone had spent most of those three months powered off inside Lauren’s desk drawer.

Investigators recovered it from the house.

The call history told a story.

My mother had tried to call me eleven times over two months.

Most calls lasted less than ten seconds.

Then stopped entirely.

I never saw them.

Why?

Lauren had blocked my number from Mom’s phone, then told me Mom was “too tired” for calls.

She had also blocked Emily, Mom’s oldest friend.

Our cousin Susan.

Her physical therapist.

And the pharmacy.

One contact remained unrestricted.

Lauren.

I stared at the report.

Not confusion.

Isolation.

Methodical.

Quiet.

Easy to explain if anyone noticed.

Mom doesn’t feel social.

Mom is sleeping.

Mom forgot her phone again.

Small lies.

Enough of them can build a prison nobody recognizes from outside.
