Chapter 8 - I ASKED MOM WHY SHE NEVER TOLD ME

Months later, after she had gained back some weight, I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Mom looked at me for a long time.
Then:
“I tried.”
That hurt.
She continued:
“But when you did answer, Lauren was nearby.”
Right.
“And when she wasn’t?”
“I thought you were happy.”
I stared.
“What?”
“You loved her.”
Her voice shook.
“I didn’t want to be the old mother destroying your marriage.”
There it was.
She had endured abuse partly because she thought speaking would cost me happiness.
Family loyalty turned against itself.
I took her hand.
“You never have to protect my marriage from the truth.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Neither do you.”
That was for me.

And she was right.
