Chapter 4 - THE BANK CARDS

The financial review took weeks.

Mom’s checking account had been used for more than food and medication.

Household purchases.

Lauren’s spa membership.

A designer handbag.

A wine club.

Then something larger.

$18,400 toward a pool renovation estimate.

I stared at the transfer.

“We don’t have a pool.”

Our attorney shook his head.

“Not at your house.”

The money had gone toward a property Lauren’s brother owned in Connecticut.

I felt cold.

Mom whispered:

“She said it was a loan.”

“Did you agree?”

“I said no.”

There it was.

The money had not simply been mismanaged.

Mom said she refused.

Lauren moved it anyway.

The investigation became financial as well as protective.

I did not decide what charges applied.

Professionals did.

My job was simpler.
