Chapter 8 - I HAD TO APOLOGIZE TOO
For months, anger kept me focused on Teresa.
Then therapy forced me to look at myself.
Amy had told me things.
Not everything.
Enough.
Teresa criticizes me.
I answered:
“She’s just adjusting.”
Teresa takes over the kitchen.
“She’s trying to help.”
Teresa says the money is hers to manage.
“She’s old-school.”
Teresa doesn’t let me take Frederick out without telling her.
“She worries.”
Every time Amy brought me discomfort, I translated Teresa’s behavior into something harmless.
Why?
Because I worked long hours.
Construction sites.
Deadlines.
Travel.
I liked believing home was handled.
Teresa gave me that illusion.
Amy paid for it.
One night I told her:
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at me.
“You already said that.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I’m sorry I made you provide evidence before I believed your discomfort.”
That was different.
Amy started crying.
So did I.
She said:
“I stopped telling you because every explanation became another reason I was misunderstanding her.”
I had no defense.
