Chapter 7 - The Innocent Target

The fallout from Daniel’s return was catastrophic and immediate. Within forty-eight hours, Vanguard Dynamics had launched a massive, coordinated media smear campaign, leaking heavily manipulated internal documents designed to tank Meridian’s stock price. Daniel was everywhere—on financial news networks, business podcasts, and magazine covers—playing the role of the wrongfully accused, brilliant founder who was ousted by a vindictive, power-hungry ex-wife.
But I knew Daniel. He wasn't just after the company. He wanted to destroy me on a cellular level. And he knew exactly where my only vulnerability lay.
It was Friday evening. I was sitting in the war room of my Highland Park estate, surrounded by my top corporate attorneys, when my private secure cell phone vibrated. The caller ID was restricted.
I answered it, stepping away from the chaotic noise of the lawyers.
"Valentina."
The voice was frantic, trembling, and choked with hysterical tears. It took me a fraction of a second to recognize it. Clare Bennett. The woman who had slept with my husband. The mother of his secret child.
"Clare," I said, my voice instantly dropping to a sharp whisper. "Where are you?"
"I’m in Ohio," she sobbed, the sound of traffic rushing in the background. "Valentina, please, I didn't know who else to call. He found us. Daniel found us."
My stomach plummeted. When Daniel went to prison, Clare had surrendered her house, changed her last name, and vanished to the Midwest to raise her son, Leo, in absolute obscurity. I had anonymously funded an ironclad trust for the little boy to ensure he wouldn't suffer for his parents' sins.
"What did he do, Clare? Are you and Leo safe?" I demanded, signaling for Richard Vance to step out into the hallway with me.
"He served me with papers this morning," Clare cried, her voice cracking. "He is suing me for full, sole custody of Leo. He hired the most ruthless family law firm in Chicago. He claims I am an unfit mother and that he has the resources to provide a better life. But Valentina... he doesn't want Leo. He wants the trust fund you set up."
The pieces fell into place with sickening clarity. Daniel had discovered the anonymous trust I had created for his son. By suing for custody, Daniel was attempting to gain legal control of those funds, which he planned to use to buy proxy shares for his hostile takeover of Meridian. He was using his own four-year-old child as a financial Trojan horse to destroy me.
"He told me that if I fight him, he will frame me for the original embezzlement charges," Clare wept. "He said Vanguard's lawyers will make sure I rot in federal prison and Leo goes into the foster system. I am so scared, Valentina. He is going to take my baby."
I closed my eyes, a wave of profound, blistering rage washing over me. Daniel had crossed the ultimate line. He was weaponizing an innocent child.
"Listen to me very carefully, Clare," I said, my voice hardening into pure, unbreakable steel. "Pack a bag for you and Leo. Right now. Do not tell anyone where you are going. My private jet will be waiting for you at the Columbus executive terminal in exactly two hours."

"Valentina... why are you helping me?" Clare whispered, her voice breaking. "I ruined your marriage."
"Because Daniel is trying to ruin your son," I replied coldly. "I am going to bring you to Dallas. I am going to put you under my private security detail. And then, I am going to teach my ex-husband what happens when you threaten a child in my city."
