Chapter 9 - The Billion-Dollar Bait

The annual Vanguard Tech Gala was held at the magnificent, glass-domed Meyerson Symphony Center. It was a blinding spectacle of wealth, ego, and corporate power. Marcus Sterling and Daniel Morales were holding court in the center of the room, sipping champagne and gloating to the press about the impending demise of Meridian Automation.

I arrived precisely at 9:00 PM. I did not sneak in through the back. I walked straight through the main entrance, wearing a blood-red, custom-tailored Valentino gown that commanded the attention of every single camera in the room. The murmurs erupted instantly. The ousted queen walking into the lion’s den.

Daniel saw me from across the room. His arrogant smile faltered for a microsecond before he composed himself. He whispered something to Marcus, and the two men glided across the marble floor to block my path.

"Valentina," Daniel sneered, his eyes raking over me with toxic disdain. "I am shocked you showed your face here. Have you come to negotiate your surrender? Because the hostile takeover vote is scheduled for Monday morning, and I assure you, you will be left with absolutely nothing."

"Not nothing, Daniel," I smiled smoothly, taking a flute of champagne from a passing waiter. "I hear you’re spending a fortune in legal fees trying to steal your own son from a terrified mother. Tell me, how exactly does Vanguard Dynamics justify funding a vanity custody battle for their Chief Strategy Advisor?"

Marcus Sterling chuckled, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. "Daniel is a vital asset to our company, Valentina. We protect our own. Meridian is outdated. You are outdated. By next week, your stock will be completely worthless."

"That is a fascinating projection, Marcus," I said, my voice carrying just enough volume to attract the attention of the surrounding billionaires and journalists. "But I think your board might be more concerned about Vanguard’s off-book revenue streams."

Marcus’s smile froze. "I have no idea what you are talking about."

I reached into my designer clutch and pulled out a sleek, black titanium flash drive. I held it up between my manicured fingers, the stage lights catching the metal.

"This drive contains the unredacted routing numbers connecting Vanguard Dynamics to sanctioned foreign intelligence agencies," I stated, my voice echoing with crystal-clear, lethal authority. "It details exactly how you, Marcus, sold proprietary biometric data to the highest bidder. And it proves that Daniel Morales facilitated the laundering of those funds through Camellia Trust LLC."

The silence in the grand hall was so absolute it was deafening. The champagne glasses stopped clinking. The cameras stopped flashing.

Daniel’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly white. "You're bluffing. Those servers were destroyed."

"I am the Chief Executive Officer of the greatest tech logistics firm in the country, Daniel," I said softly, stepping directly into his personal space. "I do not bluff. I execute."

I turned to the crowd, raising my voice. "The contents of this drive were securely transmitted to the FBI Counterintelligence Division, the SEC, and the Department of Justice exactly ten minutes ago. Vanguard Dynamics is not initiating a hostile takeover. Vanguard Dynamics is currently under federal investigation for international espionage and money laundering."
