Chapter 9 - MARK FINALLY RAN OUT OF VERSIONS
The divorce took more than a year.
The financial accounting took longer.
Properties were valued.
Accounts traced.
The disputed signature investigated.
Tax professionals became involved.
Attorneys argued over characterization.
Mark changed explanations several times.
The affair was six months.
Then eighteen.
Then “on and off.”
The company with Brenda was purely business.
Then partly personal.
The missing money had been investments for our future.
Then investments he intended to disclose later.
Every version survived until another document appeared.
Eventually, Mark stopped inventing better language.
During one settlement conference, he looked across the table and said:
“I was afraid you’d leave if you knew.”
I stared at him.
“You were right.”
He laughed once.
Not happily.
“I suppose I was.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I didn’t leave because of what the investments were.”
He looked up.
“I left because you decided preventing me from leaving mattered more than allowing me to choose.”
