Chapter 10 - The Table Built for Four

Two years later.

A warm summer evening settled over the estate, casting a long, golden light across the manicured lawns and peaceful lake.

Inside the grand dining room, beneath the glowing crystal chandelier, sat the long mahogany table built for twenty people.

No guards stood outside the heavy doors. The cold, oppressive silence that had once defined this room was gone forever.

Four settings of fine porcelain plates were set at the head of the table, positioned close together.

I sat at the head chair, wearing a casual dark blue shirt, carving a fresh roast chicken.

To my right sat Grace, looking glowing and happy in a yellow summer dress, pouring fresh lemonade into crystal glasses.

Beside her sat eight-year-old Lily and six-year-old Amara, both chatterboxes, excitedly talking about their summer swimming lessons and showing each other their colorful drawings from art class.

Amara picked up a warm dinner roll from the bread basket, looking over at me with her big, sparkling brown eyes—the same eyes that had walked into this dining room three years ago when I was a lonely, broken man.

"Daddy Julian?" Amara asked playfully.

"Yes, sweetheart?" I smiled, placing a piece of chicken onto her plate.

"Are you ever going to eat alone again?" she asked, tilting her head.

I looked around the table at my beautiful wife, whose hand reached across to squeeze mine tightly, and at my two thriving, healthy daughters laughing happily under the warm chandelier light.

I put my fork down, leaning back in my chair with a heart completely full of peace, love, and endless gratitude.

"No, Amara," I answered softly, a deep, lasting smile gracing my face. "I am never eating alone again."
