Chapter 7 - The Midnight Rescue

The weeks that followed brought a radical transformation to the Hale estate.
The dark, imposing atmosphere that had hung over the property for two years dissolved completely. The silent hallways were now filled with the sound of two young girls playing hide-and-seek, their laughter bouncing off the vaulted ceilings.
Lily and Amara became inseparable within days. Where Lily was quiet and observant, Amara was loud, curious, and endlessly energetic, pulling her older friend into games of dress-up and tea parties in the grand parlor.
I spent every waking moment away from the office, sitting on the carpet in my casual clothes, letting the girls paint my fingernails bright pink or stack building blocks on my lap while my guards watched in total disbelief from the hallway.
One evening, after the girls had fallen asleep in connected twin beds upstairs, I found Grace sitting alone on the outdoor terrace, wrapping a woolen shawl around her shoulders against the cool night breeze.
I stepped out onto the stone patio, carrying two mugs of warm spiced tea, and sat on the bench beside her.
"They're both asleep," I said, handing her a mug. "Lily asked if we could go to the zoo on Saturday."
Grace smiled, taking the mug, her fingers lightly brushing mine. "She loves animals. At the medical foundation, she used to draw pictures of elephants on her paper napkins."
We sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching the moon reflect off the tranquil waters of the estate's private pond.
"Grace," I spoke softly, looking at her side profile in the moonlight. "I've instructed my legal team to transfer ownership of the Hale Foundation facility to your name. We are converting it into a free children's hospital."
Grace turned to look at me, her eyes wide with surprise. "Julian... that facility is worth millions."
"It was built with blood money and lies," I answered firmly, taking her hand into mine. "You're going to direct it. You're going to hire real pediatric doctors who care about saving lives."
Grace stared at me, her hazel eyes shimmering with deep emotion. "I don't know what to say..."
"Say you'll stay here," I murmured, leaning closer, my eyes dropping to her soft lips. "Not as my housekeeper, Grace. As the woman who rebuilt my home."
Grace's breath hitched softly. She raised her free hand, gently resting her palm against my cheek, her fingers tracing the sharp line of my jawline.

"I'm not leaving you, Julian," she whispered softly. "We're a family now."
I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers in a tender, passionate kiss that sealed the unspoken promise between our hearts.
