Chapter 3 - THE MASS WAS BENIGN, BUT THE DAMAGE WAS REAL

Surgery lasted almost two hours.
Longest two hours of my life.
Thomas sat across from me.
His elbows rested on his knees.
Neither of us spoke.
When Dr. Shah finally appeared, I stood so quickly my chair moved backward.
“She’s okay.”
I closed my eyes.
Those two words were everything.
The mass was a large benign ovarian cyst.
No cancer.
No malignancy seen.
The ovary had twisted, but blood flow improved after surgeons untwisted it.
They were able to preserve the ovary.
I started crying.
Dr. Shah continued:
“Given the size and her symptoms, this needed attention.”
Thomas swallowed.
“How long could this have been happening?”
“Intermittent symptoms can occur over time. We can’t tell you exactly when torsion began.”
Then she looked at both of us.
“But repeated abdominal pain, increasing abdominal size, fainting, severe fatigue—those symptoms warrant evaluation.”
Thomas looked down.

He had no argument left.
