Chapter 7 - THOMAS COULDN’T APOLOGIZE HIS WAY OUT OF IT

Thomas apologized constantly after we got home.
Too constantly.
“Eliza, I’m sorry.”
At breakfast.
“I’m sorry.”
After school.
“I’m sorry.”
One night, she finally snapped.
“Dad, stop.”
He froze.
“You keep saying it like I’m supposed to make you feel better.”
Thomas went silent.
I looked at him.
She was right.
His guilt had become another thing Eliza was being asked to manage.
Thomas sat across from her.
“What do you want me to do instead?”
She thought.
“Listen.”
Simple.
Then:
“And if I say something hurts, don’t tell me I’m wrong because you can’t see it.”
Thomas nodded.
That was harder than apologizing.
Apologies are words.
